Police department welcomes two probationary officers
This month, the Waldwick Police Department will welcome two probationary officers to the borough’s force. Matthew Fleming and Christopher Goodell are due to be sworn in to their responsibilities in the near future, and will begin their course work at the Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah on Monday, Jan. 26. Upon their graduation in June, the Waldwick Police Department will officially be at 19 members. Goodell is already a familiar face in the department, where he has served as a dispatcher for a year. He is a U.S. Marine veteran who received an honorable discharge and continues to serve in the reserves. The new officer is a 2000 graduate of Waldwick High School. Before he joined the Waldwick Police Department, he was employed at Home Hardware. He studied at William Paterson University in Wayne for three semesters before joining the U.S. Marines. Waldwick Police Chief Mark Messner described Goodell as intelligent and as a good worker. Fleming is a 1996 graduate of Ridgefield Park High School. He later received a bachelor of arts degree in individualized studies from Fairleigh Dickinson University magna cum laude. He is currently working on a master’s of administrative sciences degree. He has worked for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and for the Federal Reserve in East Rutherford in a civilian capacity. Fleming’s father is a former chief of police in Little Ferry. Since his retirement from that position, the elder Fleming has become a sheriff in Florida. Chief Messner said he was pleased to have Fleming join the department. Waldwick’s police department is run under the civil service system. As a result, candidates for the police force must take an examination, and the department of personnel develops a list of the top candidates for any available positions. Military service is also weighed in the selection process. Goodell and Fleming were rated in the top three candidates among all those who took the most recent examination.
