Page 16 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • January 14, 2009 Area The celebrated Yale Whiffenpoofs (pictured) will present a cappella arrangements when they appear in Ramsey on Friday, Feb. 6. The performance will be held at 8 p.m., at Don Bosco Prep’s chapel. The Whiffs are the world’s oldest and most famous a cappella group. Every year, 14 senior Yale University men are selected to join the group. Founded in 1909, the Whiffs are dedicated to singing and fellowship with music lovers. Their musical repertoire ranges from classical jazz to English folk songs, and Motown hits of the ‘60s to recent popular hits. The group’s signature ballad, “The Whiffenpoof Song,” gained national recognition when Rudy Vallee recorded a Yale Whiffenpoofs to appear at Don Bosco Prep Flu clinics (continued from page 11) County Plaza in Hackensack. “The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each year,” said McNerney. “In New Jersey, about 2,000 deaths per year are directly attributed to pneumonia and influenza; nearly 90 percent of these deaths occur among persons age 65 and over.” “According to health professionals, influenza season most often peaks in February, but influenza viruses can continue to cause illness into the spring,” said Freeholder Julie O’Brien. “Residents will continue to benefit from vaccinations they receive in December and January.” Flu shots will be administered at no cost to Bergen County residents age 65 and over who have a Medicare card with Part B/medical insurance coverage and who are not covered by an HMO. Residents ages 18 to 64 will be charged $15 for the vaccination. Checks made payable to the Bergen County Department of Health Services will be accepted. Residents who prefer to pay cash should bring exact change. For women who are pregnant, a doctor’s note is required in order to receive a flu shot. Certain people should not get a flu shot. Do not receive a flu shot if you have a fever, had a previous allergic reaction to the flu vaccine, or if you are allergic to eggs or Thimerosal, which contains mercury. Consult your physician or local hospital clinic before receiving a flu shot if you have an acute respiratory infection or other acute infectious condition. Fell House (continued from page 3) planning board’s rejection of the site plan – based on the legal work of Cotz – terminated the application before the residents had a chance to speak. The board voted 6-0 to deny the application without prejudice, meaning that the application can be reintroduced at a future date. Residents pointed out that the demolition of the venerable house would not only destroy a valuable historical building, but that the runoff from the roofs and parking spaces of the proposed condominiums would negatively impact the Celery Farm. Marsh Warden Stiles Thomas had spoken at one hearing to request a hydrographic study of the possible consequences. Kim Arestad, another opponent, had dressed in colonial costume as John Fell and had ridden a sorrel house in a municipal parade to raise consciousness about the importance of saving the house. The Borough of Allendale is now working on an ordinance to recognize historical sites and other landmarks worthy of preservation, sparked, in part, by the John Fell House and its temporary rescue from destruction.
