Waldwick
Out-of-town swimmers will have to pay higher fees to use the Waldwick Municipal Pool this year. The borough council last week introduced an ordinance raising the fees from $110 to $150 a person for the 2009 season and establishing a two-tier system for residents. Fees for Waldwick residents will remain unchanged if badges are purchased before the pool opening on Memorial Day, but will increase by $10 after that date. “We want to centralize the registration by having it done in town hall, rather than at the pool, and we want to offer a financial inducement for residents to do it,” said Borough Administrator Gary Kratz. “They don’t even have to come in; they can do it on-line if it is a renewal,” he added. Kratz said that the present staff at town hall can handle the people as they come in and then input the information into the computer system when convenient. If the proposed ordinance is approved, pre-season badges will be $40 for senior citizens, $45 for children and $50 for adults. After Memorial Day, the fees will be $50 for seniors, $55 for children and 60 for adults. Day passes will remain at $10. Emergency services volunteers are exempt. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo proposed the higher fees for the out-of-towners. “People are banging at our door. We have the only pool in the area that is affordable and has no restrictions. We are not charging enough. We are underpriced if we have that many people clamoring to join,” she said. (continued on page 22)

Christopher Goodell, Waldwick’s newest police officer, was recently sworn in to his new duties as his parents held the Bible. He recently started his training at the Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. The department had planned to hire a second officer, but that individual withdrew for personal reasons. Waldwick is now working on adding another police officer to its ranks.
