Robotics program gets boost from local organization
The Northern Highlands High School Technology Department recently received a donation of $4,000 from the Allendale Woman’s Club for the support and development of a new robotics program. The goal of the initiative is to encourage student involvement in an innovative program designed to inspire their interest in science and technology. In the coming months, applied technology teachers Al Mugno and Purvik Patel will enter teams of students in inter-school robotics competitions. The competitions are organized by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring young people to be science and technology leaders. FIRST uses robotics to engage teams of kids in the creative, hands-on process of technological innovation. In addition to meeting entry fees and equipment purchases associated with these events, the AWC donation will also fund additional materials to enhance instruction in the field of robotics. Northern Highlands Principal John Keenan, also plans to offer a women in engineering course next year to further motivate girls to consider careers in this field.
