Waldwick February 18, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Waldwick Police Chief Mark Messner has been selected to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, which will begin in April. Messner will join more than 250 law enforcement officers from around the country and the world during this multi-week academy. The program, which is presented by FBI instructors and other professional educators, focuses on leadership development and critical thinking. Courses include legal issues, leadership, behavioral science, forensic science, law enforcement communication, fitness and health, and law enforcement arts. Courses Police chief to attend FBI National Academy are accredited through the University of Virginia. Over 37,000 law enforcement officers have attended the FBI National Academy since it was established in 1935, but only a small percentage of applicants (approximately one percent) are accepted. The program will be held at the FBI Academy at the U.S. Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia. The academy consists of a self-contained building complex with dormitories, classrooms, a cafeteria, a library, computer labs, an auditorium, a gym, an indoor firearms range, laundry facilities, a post office, bank, and offices. Four sessions are held each year. Messner attended the Waldwick public schools, and went on to major in communications at what was then Glassboro State College. After 18 years of service on the Waldwick Police force, including duty as acting chief, Messner was sworn in as chief of police in February of 2006. Last year, he attended the Law Enforcement Executive Development seminar that was held in Princeton. The chief said he was pleased that he would be attending the spring FBINA session, which will not conflict with his volunteer activities as a coach for football and wrestling.
