February 11, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 23 Allendale Notebook Fashion for Food fundraiser scheduled Tickets are on sale for this year’s “Fashion for Food” fundraiser sponsored by the Allendale Woman’s Club. Now in its fourteenth year, Fashion for Food event will be held on April 15 at Season’s in Washington Township and will benefit The Center for Food Action. The evening will feature a cocktail reception, gift baskets, dinner, and fashion show. The runway will feature fashions from Fig Leaf Boutique and custom jewelry from Lorraine Baratta. Founded in 1976, the Center for Food Action’s mission is to prevent hunger and homelessness and improve the lives of those living in poverty in North Jersey. Hard-hit by the weak economy, New Jersey food pantries are struggling to stretch their resources. The CFA has reported a vast increase in the number of people they serve along with a decline in donations. To help with this crisis, the Allendale Woman’s Club has pledged to donate 50 percent of all proceeds directly to CFA. The club will also collect donations of canned goods at the door. A preevent registration will be held April 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Allendale Borough Hall. Food pantry donations will also be collected on this day. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Brookside School Library located at 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Republican council candidates sought Two borough council seats will be available in this year’s general election in November. Candidates must run in the Tuesday, June 3 primary. Potential candidates for the Allendale Borough Council may apply for the endorsement of the Allendale Republican Organization by contacting Jackie McSwiggan, (201) 818-4027, jmcswiggan@optonline.net, before Wednesday, Feb. 25. Interested candidates should provide a brief biography and statement as to their interest and qualifications for the council position. The Allendale Republican Policy Committee would like to hear from all residents who may be interested in serving on the Allendale Borough Council. The committee is responsible for making recommendations for party endorsement of borough council candidates in each primary election and for recommendations when vacancies arise. All applicants must be registered Republicans in order to be considered in the annual convention of the Allendale Republican Organization prior to the primary filing date. Kindergarten orientation set A kindergarten orientation for parents of children entering kindergarten in September 2009 will be held on Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside School all-purpose room. This program is designed to provide parents with an overview of the Hillside kindergarten program and curriculum. Kindergarten registration will take place on Monday, March 9 for pupils whose last names begin with A through M. Registration will be held Tuesday, March 10 for those with last names beginning with N through Z. Registration time will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hillside School. Please bring proof of child’s birth, such as a birth or baptismal certificate or passport, a copy of your child’s immunization history, and proof of residency (copy of lease, driver’s license, utility bill, etc.,) to this registration. Children may be enrolled in school to begin kindergarten if they are five years of age by Oct. 1, 2009. Should a child be six years of age or older as of Oct. 1, 2009, the building principal will schedule a kindergarten screening date, as per board of education policy. Based on the screening results, the principal will advise as to the placement of the child in either kindergarten or in first grade. All children entering kindergarten must have a physical dated after Jan. 1, 2009 and all immunizations must be upto-date as required by the State of New Jersey. The school nurse will be present at registration to answer health questions and review the children’s records. The snow date for orientation will be Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. Snow date registration will be Monday, March 16 for pupils whose last name begins with A through M and Tuesday, March 17 for pupils with last names beginning with N through Z. Registration time is 9 to 11 a.m. Hillside School is located at 89 Hillside Avenue in Allendale. Museum passes available at library Two free passes to the Museum of Natural History are available to Allendale residents at the Lee Memorial Library. Each pass is for two adults and two children. Passes are available on a first come, fist served basis. A $40 deposit is required and is refunded when the pass is returned on time. Each pass may be borrowed for two days. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Allendale Library. Library offers bargain books Bargain books are available at the Lee Memorial Library located at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. This used book sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and includes children’s books, paperbacks, fiction and non fiction, current best sellers, and more all at bargain prices. Books are priced at from 25 cents to $1. Proceeds go directly to the library for the purchase of new materials. XYZ Club meets The XYZ Senior Citizens Club of Allendale meets on the first and third Friday of the month at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 165 West Crescent Avenue at 11 a.m. Allendale residents who would like to participate in club activities are most welcome. Library located at 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Garden Club seeks new members The Allendale Garden Club is seeking new members. The club is a social and community service group. Members meet on the third Wednesday of the month from September through June at 7:30 p.m. at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility located on Boroline Road. Club activities include monthly speakers who address topics such as gardening techniques, environmental concerns, and nature-oriented art. Evening tours of local gardens are held throughout June. The club also performs community service by donating to local open space and garden projects. Everyone is encouraged to join, not only the active gardener but also those who appreciate nature and beauty.
