Upper Saddle River February 4, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 Community seeks bone marrow for leukemia patient Arya, a spirited 11-year-old resident of Upper Saddle River, has been fighting leukemia for three years. Like any fifth grader, Arya loves sports, especially Tae Kwan Do and football. He is also a talented chef and enjoys preparing dishes from his specially created menus for friends and family. Now quite ill, and frequently hospitalized for radiation and chemotherapy, Arya has little stamina for his favorite activities. A bone marrow transplant is Arya’s only chance for survival. Members of Arya’s local community and his network of family and friends have partnered with DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center, to hold a bone marrow donor drive on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Firehouse on West Saddle River Road (north of Lake Street). The testing process is simple: a quick, self-administered cheek swab is all that is needed to identify a potential donor. Arya, pictured at left, needs a bone marrow transplant. If matched with Arya or another patient, the donation process is done on an out-patient basis; it is nearly painless and recovery is immediate. Prospective donors must be in good health, aged 18 to 55. The screening process is free and all donors will be entered to win tickets to any Six Flags park, courtesy of Six Flags Friends. Although there is no charge for registering or screening, donations are greatly appreciated to help defray the cost of $65 per test. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to DKMS at 33 East 33rd Street, Suite 501, New York, NY 10016 or on-line at dkmsamericas.org. The website also provides comprehensive information about bone marrow donation. Volunteers are needed to help register donors on Feb. 7. To help, e-mail your contact information and commitment for 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., or 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. to volunteerforarya@yahoo.com Dr. Heather Sculthorpe is proud to present Tracy Collins, a 2006 winner of the Hygienist of the Year from RDH Magazine.
