CERT, Northern Highlands join forces to create website
The Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus Community Emergency Response Team, established in January 2005, recently joined with the Northern Highlands Regional High School computer department to design and create a computer website for the Ho-Ho-Kus CERT organization. In the fall of 2008, Ho-Ho-Kus CERT Program Manager Stanley A. Kober, discussed this idea for a CERT website with the Ho-Ho-Kus Local Emergency Management Council, of which he is a member. During the discussion, another member, Carol Tyler, captain of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Ambulance Corps, offered the idea about using the services of a student from NHRHS. Kober agreed that this was an excellent idea and contacted the NHRHS principal in September 2008, who in turn forwarded the request to the NHRHS Web design teacher, Regina Sikorski. Kober and Sikorski met and discussed the project requirements, which Sikorski believed could be accomplished by one of the more advanced students in her class. Sikorski and Kober met with the NHRHS junior, Kyle Sheehan of Allendale, and he agreed that he could do the project. The key requirement Kober had in the design specifications he provided to Sheehan was that the website be simple and easy to use. After several design and progress meetings between Sheehan and Kober, the finished website was demonstrated to Sikorski, Kober, and the students in Sheehan’s class last month. During Sheehan’s demonstration, Kober said he was exceptionally pleased with the work Sheehan provided and that the software would now be brought to an Internet service provider that the Borough of Ho-HoKus Police Department uses for its website. The ISP will host the CERT website software on a centralized computer for all CERT members in Ho-Ho-Kus, and anyone else, to access over the Internet at any time. The Ho-Ho-Kus CERT personnel, like the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department, will manage the updates of the materials on the CERT website so the maintenance cost for the borough is kept to an absolute minimum. The Ho-Ho-Kus CERT website contains explanations of what CERT is, how it got started in Ho-Ho-Kus, why individuals should join CERT, a CERT information reply card for persons interested in joining the team, CERT class schedules with maps and directions to the class sites, photos of events and drills, and links to other websites. The site also includes information from the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management about how to prepare for and cope with storms, floods, electrical outages, lightning strikes, anti-terrorist and other manmade, natural, or technological events or disasters.
