Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES II, III & IV • February 4, 2009 Bergen County Players present ‘Doubt’ The Bergen County Players will present “Doubt,” a gripping drama by John Patrick Shanley. Under the direction of Frank Avellino, “Doubt” will be performed at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell from Feb. 14 through March 7, with shows at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Set in 1964, the drama unfolds at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church in the Bronx. Father Flynn is shaking up the traditions of the parish and its school. Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-fisted principal, sets out on a mission to expel Father Flynn whom she suspects of improper conduct with the school’s first black student. The faculty’s hopeful yet naïve Sister James is caught in a state of confusion as she tries to remain loyal to her superior and her suspicions. “Doubt” is directed by Frank Avellino. “We live in and age that strives for complete and absolute knowledge of all things. This is quite the opposite of religious faith – belief for belief’s sake. Our obsession with definitive answers has made us uncomfortable with doubt. However, when the mind is made up, the case is closed and the road comes to an end. Uncertainty, however, harbors within it infinite possibility; it provides us with the opportunity to explore our own beliefs in ways we never can when we are certain. That is the message of Mr. Shanley’s parable,” he noted Carol Fisher plays Sister Aloysius Beauvier. David Monti of Lodi returns to the Players as the magnetic Father Flynn. Leigh Adel-Arnold, also of Teaneck, plays the role of Sister James, the idealistic yet skeptical new teacher. Rounding out the cast is Bobbi Walston in the role of Mrs. Muller. “Doubt” is produced by current BCP vice president, Steve Mintz, with the assistance of Joanne Misha. Dorothy Zdanowicz and Joyce Ghia are assistants to the director, with stage management handled by Linda Macchio. Costume designs were provided by Pat Bain of Englewood, Janica Carpenter of Ridgewood, and Paula O’Brien of Park Ridge. Tickets for “Doubt” are $19, on Friday and Saturday and $16 on Sundays. They can be purchased online at www. bcplayers.org, by calling (201) 261-4200 or by visiting the box office at 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell during regular box office hours. Visa, Master Card, and American Express are accepted. become jaded by cinema monsters, but this film focuses on the pre-CGI era, when assorted techniques and long hours were required to transform actors into abominably awful-looking creatures or victims of horrible violence. This is a must-see for aficionados of the horror genre. For vintage TV fans, “The Partridge Family: The Complete Fourth Season” and “Bewitched: The Complete Seventh Season” (both Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) have recently been released. “The Partridge Family” centers on a fatherless family of six. Together, they form a rock band and tour the country in their psychedelic-painted bus. The band’s members include mom Shirley (Shirley Jones) and eldest son Keith (1970s teen idol David Cassidy). “Bewitched” stars Elizabeth Montgomery as the lovable witch Samantha, Dick Sargent as ordinary mortal Darrin Stevens, and Agnes Moorehead as Samantha’s mother, Endora. Premiering in September, 1964, “Bewitched” aired 256 episodes over eight seasons. Seventh season guest stars include Imogene Coca, Cesar Romero, Alice Ghostley, and Paul Lynde.
