Board discusses qualities sought in superintendent
In anticipation of beginning the interview process to find a new superintendent of schools for the Waldwick School District, the board of education and school administrators met recently with search consultant Dr. Gregg Hauser to discuss the qualities that would be desirable in the new chief school administrator. Superintendent Dr. Robert Penna will be retiring in June, 2010 after four years in the position. According to board President Patty Levine, the desirable traits that emerged are the following: * Someone who can look at the big picture - an individual who sees what is currently happening and can set goals to keep the district moving forward; a leader with great ideas and supportive of staff development and curriculum. * Someone who complements the current administrative team, who has an open mind and will be willing to listen to what the current administrative team has been doing and where they see the district going. * Someone who is the “right fit” for the district, who understands the community and the district and is willing to roll up his/her sleeves and do whatever needs doing, without the benefit of the many assistants and resources enjoyed by larger districts. * Someone with knowledge of Special Education - laws, programs, current trends – and with whom the Special Education Director can meet and bounce off ideas. * Someone who embraces technology - a creative thinker with 21st century skills * Someone who will look for grants to bring to the district * A student-oriented superintendent who shares the district’s “kids first” philosophy. * Someone who will continue to hold great ties with the community * Someone who works well with the board, who can help keep the board on the path to which they were elected. * A leader who works well with parents, returns phone calls, etc. but is not afraid to stand up to them. Also stressed was the need to do a thorough background check and site visits before hiring any individual. Dr. Hauser, who served as Waldwick’s interim superintendent before Dr. Penna was hired, shared his desire to find someone who is passionate about education, that will (continued on page 8)
