Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • December 16, 2009 Allendale Borough council approves 5% water rate hike by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council last week approved a five percent increase in the water rates. Former council member Robert Paterson noted that this increase might not be reflected as a five percent increase in everyone’s water bill. Paterson, the only resident to speak at last week’s council meeting, noted that he had hoped to see the water bills equalized so residents and institutions paid the same water bills based on amounts consumed, and that this had not happened yet. Councilman Robert Schoepflin said the policy of gradually adjusting institutional and residential water bills to the same level would continue toward that eventual goal. Council members, however, noted that a five percent water rate was something of an accomplishment when United Water had just asked for a 21 percent increase in the water rate. United Water supplies about 50 percent of Allendale’s water, with the remainder coming from the Allendale Water Company.
