MIDLAND PARK Holiday GIFT GUIDE A fire at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Midland Park last week has been ruled accidental after an investigation by the arson squad of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. All fires in a church require a formal investigation. A motorist passing the Godwin Avenue church at 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 23 saw the flames, which already had broken through the roof, and called 911. The fire, which originated in the Fellowship Hall, was contained therein, and no one was injured. According to Fire Chief Peter Hook, the blaze was brought under control within the hour with the assistance of the following Mutual Aid towns: Wyckoff, Waldwick, Franklin Lakes, Ramsey, Allendale and Ho-Ho-Kus. Firemen remained at the scene while the Prosecutor’s Office investigation was December 2, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 17 Fire damages meeting hall at borough church in progress, returning home around 5 a.m. About an hour later, they returned to the scene when the news media covering the event reported a small fire still in a beam. The blaze was featured on all the major morning news stations that morning. According to Father Michael Allen, pastor of the Church of the Epiphany in Allendale, which recently merged with the Church of the Good Shepherd, about 30 percent of the building suffered extensive smoke and water damage. He said the hall was used for the church’s outreach ministry, which is now scrambling to find alternate quarters. All sanctuary services have been transferred to Allendale, he said. Father Allen said once the building inspector evaluates the extent of the damage, the church will have to decide whether to refurbish the hall or build anew.
