Upper Saddle River August 26, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Fire department invites community to ‘double wetdown’ The Upper Saddle River Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate the arrival of two new pieces of fire apparatus, a 2009 Pierce Velocity Pumper and a 2008 Ford F-450 utility vehicle, at a “double wetdown” on Saturday, Aug. 29. The event is being held at the Upper Saddle River Firehouse on West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River from 4 to 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the live music and refreshments. Wetdowns are traditionally held when a new piece of fire apparatus is commissioned. Members of local fire departments are invited to bring their firefighting equipment and spray the new vehicle – or in this case vehicles -- with water. “On behalf of the officers and members of the Upper Saddle River Fire Department, I would like to thank the mayor and council, as well as the taxpayers of Upper Saddle River for their support,” said USR Fire Chief Erik Vierheilig. “I am honored to place these two new pieces of firefighting apparatus in service to protect the lives and property of the residents of Upper Saddle River.” The all-volunteer Upper Saddle River Fire Department has been serving the community since 1945. In addition to answering emergency calls, the volunteers also take part in drills, training, meetings, and fundraisers to support the department’s mission of preserving life and property. The department currently has approximately 40 volunteer members ready to serve the community of Upper Saddle River in a courteous and professional manner. “We take pride in our service delivery and we use our training and skills to assist our residents, business partners, and visitors on approximately 350 calls for service annually,” Chief Vierheilig noted. The department provides fire suppression and prevention, aid with hazardous materials, and public education. Members of the community are encouraged to get to know their firefighters by visiting fire headquarters and attending community events. The Upper Saddle River Fire Department is a member of the Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid Association. This community of first responders allows local municipalities access to additional resources and manpower in the event of a large-scale incident.
