Meet the Chefs to begin Meet the Chefs will begin Monday, Sept. 14 when the Upper Saddle River Library will host Chris Calcagano, executive chef at Restaurant L in Allendale. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Calcagano will focus on bringing fresh, local ingredients from field to table, and will demonstrate how to put a modern spin on classic comfort food. Registration is required; seating is limited. Future Meet the Chefs programs will also feature chefs from local restaurants who will demonstrate their skill as they prepare a signature creation. Flu and pneumonia vaccines available The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health and the Saddle River Board of Health will be offering flu and pneumonia vaccines to all residents over 65 years of age. Vaccines will be given from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at borough hall, 100 East Allendale Avenue. Registration is required; call (201) 291-6090. Flu and pneumonia vaccines are covered by traditional Medicare Part B. Recipients must present their card at the time of service. HMO participants may choose to go to their primary care provider or choose to pay $27 for a flu vaccination. Pneumonia vaccines will be available for those who have never had a previous pneumonia vaccination. The cost is $35. Flu shots are encouraged for individuals who are age 65 and over, and for those with chronic illnesses. Library to offer classes The Upper Saddle River Library offers a variety of fitness classes. Zumba classes meet on Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m.; TaiChiChuan on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Pilates on Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.; yoga, all levels, on Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.; and yoga, gentle stretch for
seniors, on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. Beginners Bridge classes will be held on Mondays, Sept. 14 through Nov. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost of the class is $100 for eight sessions. Intermediate Bridge classes will be held on Fridays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $125 for eight sessions. Book clubs set to begin The Upper Saddle River Library hosts two books clubs for area residents. Novels at Night will meet on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss “Terrorist” by John Updike. Coffee Talk will meet on Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “The Kitchen Boy” by Robert Alexander. Sign up at the circulation desk and pick up a copy of the book. The Upper Saddle River Library is located at 245 Lake Street. Call (201) 3272583. Fall tennis clinics registration open Registration is now being accepted for the 2009 fall tennis clinics. There will be one five-week session held at the Wickersham Tennis Courts, located in front of the Reynolds School. The clinics will be held on Wednesdays, beginning on Sept. 9. The cost for the entire five-week session is $90. Registration forms are available at borough hall or on the website at www.USRtoday.org. USR Day planned; volunteers needed Upper Saddle River Day will be held Sept. 12 in Lions Park from 2 to 7 p.m. The rain date for this event is Sunday, Sept. 13. Food wristbands can be purchased in advance at the USR Library or borough hall for a cost of $25 for a family up to six, $10 for an individual, and are free for seniors age 62 and over and for children under six years of age. Tickets will also be available the day of the picnic. Activities will include family games, face painting, carnival rides, and
stage performances and fun for all. Ramapo announces Dean’s List Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah has named the following local students to the Dean’s List for the spring 2009 semester: Francesca N. Amen, Roya Amirniroumand, Laurence F. Cinquergrana, Madeleine S. Cudina, Carina Fortuna and Matthew H. Heitman, all of Saddle River; and Jonathan Bonacolta, Jacqueline Kelly, and Michael D. Trimper, all of Upper Saddle River. Junior Woman’s Club sponsors contest The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club is hosting a Cutest Baby Contest. Parents are invited to enter their children, ages newborn to two years. Photographs will be displayed at Upper Saddle River Day, which is scheduled for Sept. 12. Residents who attend the event will cast votes to determine the winner of this contest. Photographs may be submitted to Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club, P.O. Box 101, Saddle River, NJ 07458. Attention: Cutest Baby Contest. There is a $5 entry fee. Entries will be accepted on the day of the contest. Photographs may be picked up immediately following the contest. The winner will receive a gift. Presentation plans events for singles The Church of the Presentation has events planned for single in the month of August.
