Waldwick
Waldwick’s municipal pool will be closed the week of Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 due to a lack of available lifeguards. The pool will reopen for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5, 6, and 7, after which the facility will be closed for the season. Hours on Labor Day weekend will be noon to 8 p.m. The decision to close the pool was made in the interest of safety at last week’s council session. Pool Manager Alyssa Ruggiero had told borough officials she was concerned about the lack of manpower during the final full week of the season. In an interview with Villadom TIMES, she explained that she is a teacher and will be returning to school on Sept. 1. Waldwick’s public school students will return on Sept. 2, which would deplete her cadre of teen lifeguards, and many college students will also be returning to school early this year. Ruggiero said approximately seven lifeguards are needed each day during pool season. Depending on how busy the pool is, she may ask two or three lifeguards to work at the same time. The pool manager confirmed that start-

ing school before the Labor Day holiday would cause Waldwick to lose about 10 lifeguards, including several veterans. The three-day Labor Day Weekend would not be a concern, she said, because several high school students would be able to resume their posts as lifeguards at the pool. She added that the early close would not affect swimming lessons or swim team activities, which Ruggiero said have ended for the year. The Waldwick Pool opened on May 23 with Ruggiero at the helm for her first season. The pool manager is an elementary teacher in the Dumont, where she also resides. Ruggiero holds certification as a pool operator, has experience working with children in a recreation setting, and has strong bookkeeping skills to maintain the operation’s financial records. The popular swimming facility received a number of improvements before opening day. New filters and pumps were installed in the main pool and the children’s pool, and lane lines have been painted at the request of the swimming club.
The Waldwick community is invited to attend the dedication of a picnic table on Saturday, Aug. 22 in memory of Sean Fisher, the Waldwick student who died a year ago after collapsing during a Waldwick Recreational Football practice for seventh and eighth graders. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Traphagen School playground. “Sean’s mother wanted the memorial at Traphagen because all Sean’s good memories where there,” said Susan Stallard, a neighbor who spearheaded the memorial drive. “We want other kids to enjoy this table in his memory,” she added.

Stallard explained that the original idea was to purchase a bench for the playground, but after discussions with the family, it was decided that the large metal table with benches would be more practical. Stallard said the dedication is being held as a thank you to the residents who contributed to the memorial fund. “They gave us the bench,” she said. “We want to thank them.” Most of the funds were collected during Waldwick Day last year, she explained.
