University announces Dean’s List The University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware has named the following Allendale students to its Dean’s List for the spring 2009 semester: John William Dalo, a sophomore political science major in the College of Arts and Sciences; Dawn Evelyn Delle Bovi, a senior hotel, restaurant and institutional management major in the College of Business and Economics; Lauren Elizabeth Griffith, a sophomore early childhood education major in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy; and Justine Danielle Librot, a junior communication and psychology major in the College of Arts and Sciences. To be placed on the Dean’s List, a student must have a grade point average of 3.33 or above for the semester. Town-Wide Garage Sale planned Allendale residents are invited to participate in the Allendale Woman’s Club Sixth Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale. The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Dig out those unwanted treasures hidden away in an attic, basement, closet, or garage. Summer reading program begins The “Four Towns, Three Months, Two Books, One Hot Topic” summer reading program is about to begin. Over 1,000 individuals voted on this summer’s selections for the topic “Child Soldiers of Africa.” The fiction selection is “What is the What” by Dave Eggers and the non-fiction choice is “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” by Ishmael Beah. The second related movie evening will feature the documentary “Daratt” (dry season) a 2006 film from Chad on Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. The movie will be shown in the Northern Highlands High School auditorium. The program will wrap up with an evening event planned for Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Northern Highlands. The evening will include book discussions, performances, speakers, and accounts of their journey from the students going on the summer trip to Tanzania. Cub Scout registration underway Open registration for Allendale Cub Scouts is now underway for 2009-10. All boys living in Allendale who are in grades one through five are eligible to join. Scouting provides a fun environment where boys can develop character, learn values, and gain self-confidence while embarking on exciting adventures. Teens invited to express themselves Local teens are invited to review books all summer for the Allendale Library’s new website, allendalelibraryteens. webs.com. Each review earns an entry into the weekly contest for prizes. The website also has recommended book lists, how to submit writing to the up-and-coming online literary magazine, and information on volunteering at the library. Register for fall soccer The Allendale Recreation Commission is registering for the 2009 soccer program. The program is open to Allendale children in pre-K through grade 12. Career development group offered The Allendale Clergy Association has formed a career development group called Opening Doors. The group provides a venue for peer support, networking, and practical job search resources for those who are in transition or seeking to rejoin the workforce. Opening Doors will provide resources for those who seek a communal face-to-face setting, and for those who would prefer to access them from home. Weekly meetings are held on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Highlands Presbyterian Church, at 270 Franklin Turnpike. All are welcome. The first Wednesday of each month begins with a specific career development topic such as self/career assessment, resume/cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and tutorials on networking sites. On-site WiFi will be available, and representatives from the business community and the Allendale clergy will be on hand at each meeting. Library located at 100 Brookside Avenue. Garden Club seeks new members The Allendale Garden Club is seeking new members. The club is a social and community service group. Members meet on the third Wednesday of the month from September through June at 7:30 p.m. at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility located on Boroline Road. Club activities include monthly speakers who address topics such as gardening techniques, environmental concerns, and nature-oriented art. Evening tours of local gardens are held throughout June. The club also donates to local open space and garden projects. Everyone is encouraged to join, not only the active gardener but also those who appreciate nature and beauty.
