Writer’s Life program begins The Upper Saddle River Library is offering a writer’s program beginning Wednesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Jumpstart a writing project. Preschool summer program offered Saddle River Valley Cultural Center is offering preschool summer fun the weeks of June 8 and 15 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Preschoolers may join for the week or by the day. Cleanup Day set The USR Recreation Commission will sponsor its annual town-wide Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to noon. Participants may come to Lions Park during those hours. Garbage bags will be provided. Cleanup areas will also include the school grounds, the Riverwalk, and Hess Park. Parents are asked to be available to drive children to different locations. Since all organizations in Upper Saddle River benefit from the parks and facilities in town, it is imperative that those who benefit also contribute to keeping these areas clean and beautiful. The group’s next meeting is May 6 at 7:30 p.m. The topic of discussion will be “Belong to Me” by Marisa De los Santos. The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month. Fishing Derby planned The Upper Saddle Recreation Commission is hosting this year’s Annual Fishing Derby on May 9 at Liberty Park. Bucky Rehain will again be hand to offer assistance to children during the derby. Rehain will be walking around the pond and providing answers to questions about various fish and wildlife issues. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon. All Upper Saddle River residents, ages five and over, are invited to bring their poles and bait to this event. Awards will be presented. Youth Triathlon T-shirt design contest set The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission is organizing a T-shirt design contest for the Sixth Annual Upper Saddle River Youth Triathlon. All children who live in the borough or attend school in Upper Saddle River may participate. First prize is a bike. The winning design will be featured on the triathlon T-shirt. Deadline for submissions is April 30. The Youth Triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, will incorporate swimming, biking, and running and is opened to all children ages eight through 14. The children will begin their swim at the Saddle River Valley Swim & Tennis Club, bike to Lions Park, and finish the running portion of the triathlon at Lions Park. The swimming, biking, and running distances will be different for the two separate age groups of children. Special fundraisers, food, and prizes will be set up at the finish line in Lions Park. Joyce Carol Oates to speak The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will host award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates at the Book and Author Luncheon on May 8. The event will be held at the Ramsey Country Club from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 each and registration forms are available at the library, 245 Lake Avenue in Upper Saddle River. Seating is limited. Garden Club offers scholarships The Saddle River Garden Club will be awarding academic scholarships to students studying or planning to study environmental sciences or related fields including horticulture and botany. The scholarships total $1,000, represents the amount raised by the garden club’s annual plant sale. To qualify, an applicant must be a Bergen County resident.
