Established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson, the scholarship fund is supported by the club’s annual plant sale, to be held this year on Saturday, May 16. To qualify, an applicant must be a current resident of Bergen County and an enrolled student studying or planning to study environmental science or related fields, including horticulture and botany. There is no age limit and returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be awarded. Club hosts dahlia expert Steve Nowotarski, past president of the Mid Island Dahlia Society and a senior judge of the American Dahlia Society will give a talk “Growing Dahlias the Organic Way” to the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club on Monday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. Nowotarski has successfully hybridized new dahlias, and is a dahlia consultant to White Flower Farms. The meeting will be held in the second floor meeting room of the Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall at 333 Warren Avenue. Nowotarski will speak at 7:30 p.m. and the business meeting will follow. Library board to meet The Worth Pinkham Memorial Library Board of Trustees will meet on Monday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the library located at 91 Warren Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. VFW, American Legion hold joint recruitment The members of the Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192 (HoHo-Kus/Ridgewood) in Ho-Ho-Kus and the American Legion’s Ridgewood Post 53 in Ridgewood will conduct a joint recruiting event, weather permitting, on April 18 and 25. On April 25, the two groups will be at the Ho-Ho-Kus Post Office from 9 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. On April 18, the groups will be at Daily Treat Restaurant in Ridgewood from 9 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m. These two organizations principally cover Ridgewood, Ho-Ho-Kus, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. The Washington Elm VFW Post 192 with its 89 members was chartered by the National VFW in 1939. The American Legion’s Ridgewood Post 53 with its 97 members was chartered by the National American Legion in 1919. All military personnel on active duty or honorably discharged veterans unable to attend this joint recruiting event should contact Stanley Kober at (201) 445-1121 to see if they qualify to join VFW Post 192 or Bob Paoli at (201) 445-1738 to join the American Legion’s Ridgewood Post 53. Contemporary Club offers scholarship The Contemporary Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will award a $2,000 scholarship to a high school senior who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, noteworthy extra curricular involvement, and meaningful community service. Any high school senior who has lived in Ho-Ho-Kus for at least one year prior to the application date is eligible for this scholarship. Special delivery school transcript, a personal statement, a guidance counselor’s statement, and two references no later than Monday, May 4. Seniors plan events The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors will host “Double Play” starring Drew Smith on the autoharp and guitar and Robbie Wedeen on the guitar and banjo on Tuesday, April 14 at 1 p.m. Smith has been playing the autoharp for over 30 years and has been leading workshops for over 20 years, singing and performing for many folk clubs and at many festivals.
