The result is a fanciful characterization of two runners breaking through the finish line. “I like to put in personal little facts in my artwork, like the runner is wearing a bib with the Waldwick zip code on it. (Then when we decided to add the second runner I put the race date on his bib,” Barbagallo explained. A muralist, portrait artist and illustrator, Barbagallo is also painting the race route map, highlighting some of Waldwick’s well known landmarks. Kowalski said he took photographs of the actual race route showing what the runners would actually see, and they were incorporated into the map mural. “I thought it would be more interesting for the runners, and they could better visualize the route,” Kowalski explained. The artist, whose brother in law, Bobby Mainenti from Mayo’s Sportswear, is printing the shirts, is self taught in many art mediums and was mentored by well-known Waldwick artist Andrea Mistretta. The Run/Walk is scheduled for Sunday, April 26 (rain or shine) beginning at 9 a.m.; 9:30 a.m. for the 1 mile Walk. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with opening ceremonies set for 8:30 a.m. The course has been officially certified and sanctioned by the USATF, giving the event recognition as an official running course in New Jersey. Proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk will go to the Waldwick Ambulance Corps; the Community Alliance, the organization that is restoring the Waldwick Train Station and surrounding neighborhood; and to other town beautification projects. Donations of canned food will also be accepted for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. The event, to run until 12 noon, is being sponsored by more than 40 local businesses. There will be entertainment, activities for children, food and complimentary coffee service. There will be top race finisher prizes and race medals for children as well as door and prizes after the race. The run/walk will begin and end at the Waldwick High School lower turf field (Wyckoff and Hopper avenues). Goodie bags and prizes will be given to all participants. All pre-registrants will receive a race day t-shirt. Entry fees are $20 per person (if received by April 18); $25 thereafter. Fun Walk registration is $10 a person. They may also be picked up and dropped off in person at Kallman Travel, 20 Harrison Ave., Waldwick. Same-day registration will be from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. at the field. Active chamber members or sponsors for the 5K Run who want to contribute items for the goody bags may drop them off at the Kallman Travel office. The deadline is Friday, April 17.
