Councilwoman, former mayor review COST membership
by Jennifer Crusco Ho-Ho-Kus Councilwoman Maryellen Lennon and former Mayor Rusty Thompson are currently reviewing whether the borough should become a member of the New Jersey Council on Special Transportation. The organization, also known as COST, is a non-profit statewide group that promotes, supports, and provides information about New Jersey’s community transportation services and paratransit. According to the COST website, the organization was founded in 1981 by transportation professionals. The group currently represents a majority of specialized and community transit operations. COST members receive funding from casino revenues, Title IIIB, title XIX, Title X, Medicaid, the Federal Transit Administration, the Veterans Administration, and state, county, and municipal sources. In a recent letter to the borough, NJ COST President Michael M. Vieria noted, “Whether your municipality operates one vehicle, an entire fleet of vehicles or no vehicles at all, there are residents in your community who rely on these services regularly for medical appointments, dialysis treatments, sheltered workshops, food shopping, nutrition sites employment, welfare to work employment, recreational activities, (and) rail and bus shuttles…“As a member of the NJ Council on Special Transportation, your municipality will be kept well informed of issues pertaining to paratransit and community transportation services; new laws and regulations, funding sources, professional contacts, and so much more. Monthly meetings are also held with topics and round table discussions that are of interest to our profession.” Those who cannot attend the meetings, which are held at the Monmouth County Library in Manalapan, are kept updated via e-mail. COST members include 21 county transportation systems, municipalities, non-profit agencies, New Jersey Transit, and state officials and businesses that provide transportation products and services, the letter states. Membership costs are $50 for active members and $25 for associate members. This year, the organization has planned multiple events. The 25th Annual New Jersey Paratransit “Roadeo” will be held on April 25 at NJ Department of Transportation Headquarters in West Trenton. The 33rd Annual TransAction Transportation Conderence will be held in Atlantic City May 13 through 15, and the 14th Annual COST Community Transportation & Paratransit Seminar and Vendor Expo will be held in Holmdel on Sept. 25.
