Allendale
Borough resident selected to meet Al Gore
John Cranston of Allendale, a sophomore at the Craig Upper School in Lincoln Park, was one of only 75 high school students selected from over 7,000 to meet Al Gore at the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference held in Washington, DC. Although the actual meeting was brief, Cranston received the additional honor of being seated in the V.I.P. section during the conference presentations in College Park, MD. Over the course of several days, Cranston heard keynote including General Colin Powell, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Eric Weihenmayer, the only blind person to climb Mount Everest. The culmination of the conference was the inauguration of Barack Obama, which John witnessed from the National Mall. Later that evening, he attended the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference Gala at the Smithsonian Museum. “Most of the people at the gala wandered around looking at the fantastic air and spacecraft exhibits. It was terrific,” said Cranston, who has represented Craig School at six National Youth Leadership Conferences since 2006. The sponsoring organization, the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, is a nonpartisan, independent, educational group that has inspired over 200,000 young leaders since its inception in 1985. “I have met and worked with students from all over the United States during these conferences,” Cranston said. “We separate into focus groups to gain leadership skills and experiences. I have learned about independence and sensitivity to others’ opinions. Traveling around different cities and making new friends has been invaluable to me.” Cranston plans to continue participating in leadership conferences for the remainder of high school and college.
