Devastated, Patrick admits his paranormal act is fake, renounces his earlier life, and uses his amazing skills of observation and analysis -- talents that made him appear psychically gifted -- to bring killers to justice. At crime scenes across California, Patrick now helps an elite team of detectives break their toughest cases. But no matter how many criminals he catches, Patrick never forgets his primary goal: finding Red John and bringing him down. Over the years, the most successful hour-long TV dramas have fallen into three categories: police/crime, law/ lawyers, and medical. “The Mentalist” is a clever variation on the crime-solving drama, with the hefty influence of “The Fugitive” tossed in for good measure. In “The Fugitive,” a central character experienced weekly adventures, all the while searching for one person, the one-armed man. “The Mentalist” borrows that quest theme, giving the series an interesting twist. Simon Baker is outstanding as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. The six-disc DVD set contains 23 episodes. Extras include interviews with the creators, directors, and cast, the featurette “Cracking the Crystal Ball: Mentalist vs. Psychic,” unaired scenes, and a gag reel. “Ugly Betty: The Complete Third Season” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment) is a six-disc set of the ABC-TV series. Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) is the definitive fish-out-ofwater in the snooty world of high fashion. She tries ceaselessly to fit in with her colleagues at a glossy magazine, and, in season three, her success shocks her coworkers at Mode. She is leaving the old neighborhood in Queens for a Manhattan apartment and a slot at YETI, the Young Editors Training Institute. This season benefits greatly from plentiful exterior shots of New York City, which give just the right touch to a show about the fashion industry. Guest stars in season three include Christine Baranski, Bernadette Peters, Ralph Macchio, Rachel Dratch, Joy Behar, and Billie Jean King. Based on the Colombian novela “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” “Ugly Betty” has been awarded Golden Globe, Peabody, NAACP, and Imagen awards as well as 11 Emmy nominations. Extras include deleted scenes, bloopers, audio commentary, and a featurette about the New York City location filming. Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle
