Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood will host a Selichot musical performance and services at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. All are invited to join the synagogue’s community in preparing spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The program will begin with the concert by the a cappella group Tavim, followed by light refreshments. Rabbi David Fine and Cantor Caitlin Bromberg will lead services with the liturgy and music of the Selichot service. Tavim, from Congregation Beth Sholom in Teaneck, will sing in both English and Hebrew, performing modern twists on liturgical classics and pop hits from Israel. Temple Israel Director of Education Rabbi Sharon Litwin will also perform in the alto section. The group is currently finishing its third recording. The Selichot Service is designed to help worshipers direct their hearts and minds to the process of teshuvah (returning). At the service, worshipers begin to examine their deeds of the past year, seeking forgiveness from God, and promising to improve their behavior in the New Year. Some of the prayers and music for the Selichot service are taken from the services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This provides a musical transition between the “old
