Parker School in Hackensack, was selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 20 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports Landmarks of American History and Culture workshops so teachers can study with experts in the humanities. Parisi participated in a workshop entitled “The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History, and Culture of the Mississippi Delta.” The one-week program, held at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, was directed by Dr. Luther Brown. The workshop explored the history of the blues, civil rights, political leadership, and agriculture Wyckoff Sale Days! Only 80 teachers from across the country were selected to participate in this particular workshop, and approximately 300 teachers applied. Topics for the 20 Landmarks of American History and Culture workshops offered for teachers this summer included George Washington, Emily Dickinson, the Civil Rights Movement, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, the U.S. Constitution, the Mississippi Delta, the Civil War, Fort Niagara, the Underground Railroad, Benjamin Franklin, the Industrial Revolution, Zora Neale Hurston, Ellis Island, the Alamo, and women’s suffrage in the West. The 1,600 teachers who participated in these studies will teach over 50,000 American students this school year. Board of education hires new teachers The Wyckoff Board of Education has hired six teachers for the 2009-10 school year. Tavit Jinivizian has been hired as a fourth grade teacher at the Lincoln School at a step one salary of $45,855. Francis Deegan has been hired as a special education and resource room teacher at the Eisenhower School with a $50,855 salary based on an MA degree and step one of the salary guide. Jessica Voigt has been hired as a special education and resource room teacher at the Eisenhower Middle School at a salary of $45,855 based on a BA. Alyssa Blum has been hired as a behaviorist at a salary of $52,555 pending clearance of required documents. Jo-Ann Geary has been hired as a speech and language therapist with an MA at step 15 of the salary guide. Her salary will be $87,219. Mary Lavelle has been hired as a leave replacement special education teacher at the Sicomac School at a salary of $60,555 based on an MA plus 30 credits on the salary guide. J. KOSTER Cheryl L.
