Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • September 9, 2009 Area Ramapo presents provocative art with domestic themes Ramapo presents provocative art with domestic themes “Jackie Skrzynski: Ten Years After” will open in the Kresge Gallery at Ramapo College of New Jersey on Thursday, Sept. 10 and continue through Oct. 16. A preview reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and an artist’s talk is scheduled for 6 p.m. that day. The exhibition features a look at 10 years of work by incoming assistant professor of painting and drawing, Jackie Skrzynski. Her artistic practice features compelling references to what the artist calls “the feral nature of domestic life.” The provocative imagery is strongly influenced by family experiences and mythology, and includes hybrid human and animal forms. “Ten Years After” in the show title refers to the length of time since her first child was born. In addition to family-themed subjects, a more recent series explores violence through depictions of deer killed on the side of the road. Ramapo Professor Emeritus of Art History, Carol Duncan wrote that Skrzynski’s imagery “avoids completely the cute, the cuddly, and the sentimental, even when she used her own children as models…If she breaches the boundary between the human and the animal, she does so to challenge its veracity and retrieve something of value on the other side.” Skrzynski received her bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of arts and master of fine arts, from the State University of New York at Albany. She has taught studio classes at Ramapo College for a number of years. Her work has been included in many prominent exhibitions including “Voice,” which was curated by Kara Walker, and a recent one-person exhibition at the University of Arkansas. Her artwork has also been featured twice in the respected online publication “2 River View: Poetry, Art and Theory.” She is currently featured in a group exhibition at Georgia College and State University. This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Kresge Gallery is located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, 1 to 7 p.m. For more information, call (201) 684-7147.
