Ridgewood
Police investigate disturbances
The Ridgewood Police Department investigated several disturbances involving substance abuse and other issues. On Sept. 29, Patrolman Elwood observed a motorist who was exceeding the speed limit and conducted a motor vehicle stop on Oak Street. During the stop, one of the juveniles was instructed to get out of the vehicle. The juvenile attempted to put something in his pants. Elwood discovered that the object was a bag containing nine glassine bags of marijuana. The juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. His case will be heard in Juvenile Court. At 10:17 p.m. on Oct. 9, the patrol responded to a complaint from a Grove Street resident. Officers were informed that a man had been found lying on the front lawn of the resident’s home. When the resident asked him what he was doing, the man began yelling and became violent. The officers attempted to speak to man, but he became agitated. The man was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct. He was released a pending for a future appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court. The next day, a Wanaque resident reported that an unknown person had used her debit card at the Hess station on Goffle Road. The victim had used the card in the morning. As soon as she realized it was missing, she called her bank and a bank employee reported that the card had been used. The matter is still under investigation by the Ridgewood Detective Bureau. On Oct. 12, Patrolmen Elwood and Mormino responded to a report about a group of people entering a garage. When Elwood opened the garage door, he found four people sitting in the vehicle and smoke billowing from the vehicle. The four juveniles were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. They were released pending a hearing in Juvenile Court. J. KOSTER

Mystery author Chris Grabenstein recently visited Ben Franklin Middle School. He spent the entire day at Ben Franklin, first addressing all sixth and seventh grade students in the auditorium and then conducting writing workshops for 48 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. He discussed the elements of mystery writing and challenged each of them to create a story with the elements the group had developed. He offered the writer of the best story a signed manuscript copy of his yet unpublished third mystery novel. The author’s visit was arranged by Media Specialist Linda Rothschild and Assistant Principal Greg Wu. Grabenstein is pictured working with some of the students.
