Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • October 21, 2009 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) to Baby Jane?” Here, she is harshly made up in dark pageboy wig, age-inappropriate dresses, and jangling bracelets as an ax-murderess released from an asylum after 20 years. As she tries to reconnect with her daughter (Diane Baker), suspicions arise as to whether she is still dangerous. “Homicidal” (1961) is one of Castle’s best films. For once, the gimmick (a Fright Break 10 minutes before the end of the movie when audience members could get their money back if they sat in the Coward’s Corner) is secondary to the story. The brutal stabbing of a justice-of-the-peace initiates an investigation of dark family secrets in a quiet, small town. Castle was an admirer of Alfred Hitchcock and this film reflects the Hitchcock influence. Unlike most of his movies, which were geared for younger viewers, “Homicidal” deals with genuinely disturbing themes, manipulates the viewer, and cleverly sets up a shocking climax. The other films in the five-disc Castle Collection box set are “13 Ghosts” (1960), “Mr. Sardonicus” (1961), “Zotz!” (1962), “Frightened Girls!” (1963), and “The Old Dark House” (1963). Bonuses include the documentary “Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story” and featurettes on Castle’s promotional gimmicks. “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live” (Time Life) is a ninedisc set chronicling rock and roll from its beginnings to the present. Created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the set features 125 performances by the most influential and popular figures in rock history. Among the artists are Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Tom Petty, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Eight of the discs feature an assortment of performances spanning more than two decades of ceremonies, induction and acceptance speeches, and never-before-seen backstage and rehearsal footage. The ninth disc features “The Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” a concert that opened the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland in 1995. Performers at this concert include John Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, Lou Reed, Soul Asylum, The Allman Brothers, Sheryl Crow, The Kinks, John Fogerty, James Brown, and Al Green. Over the years, rock icons have inducted other rock icons. Paul McCartney inducted John Lennon. Paul Simon inducted Stevie Wonder, Steven Tyler inducted AC/DC, Elton John inducted The Beach Boys, and Axl Rose inducted Elton John. The set contains once-in-a-lifetime performances as talented artists join on stage to create rock music magic. A highlight is the 1988 rendition of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” with George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Mick Jagger, and Billy Joel. If this mega-set seems pricey at $119.96, you can wait for a three-DVD version to be released on Nov. 3 that will include 44 performances and over four hours of induction speeches and rehearsal footage. “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show: The Complete Series” (Shout! Factory) is the Showtime series that premiered in 1986 starring up-and-coming comedian Shandling in a series that stretched the parameters of traditional TV sitcom. Shandling was a TV sitcom writer (“Sanford and Son,” “Welcome Back Kotter”) who left writing to pursue his standup career. “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” is a surreal look at the daily life of a young single man who is a comedian. Shandling did anything and everything to break the “fourth wall” between performer and audience. As George Burns had done three decades earlier, Shandling opened each show speaking directly to the audience, joined in the story, and paused from time to time to make observations to the camera. Over the years, guest stars played themselves and were woven into the fabric of the show. They include Tom Petty, Rob Reiner, Vanna White, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Mull, Gilda Radner (in her last TV performance), Carl Reiner, Chevy Chase, Red Buttons, and Jeff Goldblum. Starting in 1988, the Fox Network aired episodes originally shown on Showtime. The 16-disc box set contains 72 episodes. A bonus feature takes the viewer behind the scenes, illustrating how a typical show was put together. “Peanuts 1970s Collection, Volume 1” (Warner Home Video) is a two-disc set containing six animated TV specials starring those precocious Charles M. Schulz folk: Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, and Snoopy. Holidays are well represented by shows that originally aired at Thanksgiving (“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”), Easter (“It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown”) and Valentine’s Day (“There’s No Time for Love, Charlie Brown”). Debuting on DVD are “Play It Again, Charlie Brown” and “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown.” Also included is the new featurette “Woodstock: Creating Snoopy’s Sidekick.” ARIES - Mar 21/Apr ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 2020 If If you’ve been down in the dumps, it’s you’ve been down in the dumps, it’s time get over it, Aries.
