(continued from Entertainment page) camera, such as Moore attempting to make a citizen’s arrest of Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, trying to speak with traders outside the New York Stock Exchange, driving up in an armored truck to AIG demanding the bailout money be returned, and placing yellow crime scene tape aroundthe New York Stock Exchange because Wall Street greed destroyed the life savings of so many Americans. Greed is the real target of “Capitalism: A Love Story.” Moore’s thesis is that, because of legislation favorable to the banks, backroom deals, deregulation, and the complacency of Americans, amazing amounts of power have been allowed to reside with financial institutions. He thinks the 99 percent of Americans being harmed by this failure to control capitalism’s excesses should rise up in revolt. The Bush administration comes under particular scru-
tiny and criticism, not only for its failure to curb Wall Street’s abuses, but also its zeal to encourage them. President Obama does not escape Moore’s microscope, however. As polls before the election showed Obama becoming more popular with voters, the big banks started donating huge sums to his campaign in order to get in good with him in the event he won the presidency. Rated R, “Capitalism: A Love Story” is captivating, if not perfect. Moore allows himself to meander a bit so his main thrust is sometimes blurred. However, these little side trips are also interesting and informative. Moore’s ultimate goal is to goad the viewers into having a louder voice and becoming more involved in government, a message echoing that of President Obama. The “love story” part of the film’s title is curious. Perhaps Moore is saying that capitalism is a system we have embraced wholeheartedly and unconditionally. The movie wants Americans to take another, more critical look at it, including the way it permits some to act immorally as they wave the banner of democracy. turn when Lorrie (Sara Dylan) receives a gift from a secret admirer and Jill (Rachel Mitchem) searches the grounds for her missing boyfriend and happens on a peculiar building in the woods where horrific plans are afoot. “Gnaw” combines elements of “Saw” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and goes out of its way to gross out viewers with graphic images -- nothing new for a contemporary horror flick, but director Gregory Mandry pulls out all the stops in this unrated film. Bonuses include a making-of featurette and audio commentary from the director. Remember Pat Paulsen? He was a regular cast member of “The Smother Brothers Comedy Hour” for three seasons and mounted a tongue-in-cheek campaign to run for president in 1968, one of his slogans being, “If elected, I will win.” In 1970, the comedian starred in a show of his own. Now available on DVD, “Pat Paulsen’s Half a Comedy Hour” (MPI Home Video) features his trademark deadpan delivery in a series of skits with a roster of celebrity guest stars including Don Rickles, Angie Dickinson, Tom Smothers, Debbie Reynolds, Andy Williams, Don Adams, Henry Fonda, Mike Connors, Wilt Chamberlain, Jo Ann Worley, and Paulsen’s 1968 political rival, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey. The DVD contains 13 episodes plus Paulsen commercials, a collection of his greatest TV bits, network promos, a water safety film, and a bio.

(continued from page 21) for their Thanksgiving dinner. Suddenly, Mary’s wealthy and estranged mother, Isabella (Jacqueline Bisset), comes to visit, and finds a kindred spirit in Mary’s eldest daughter, Tilly (Tatiana Maslany). Mary resents her mother’s attempts to help them out of their financial hardships. Originally aired on the Hallmark Channel, “An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving” is rich in period detail and details strained relationships and their backgrounds before they are mended. The movie offers an idealized version of a nineteenth-century American family and is reminiscent of such classic films as “Meet Me in Saint Louis” and “Life with Father.” The single bonus feature is an on-location, making-of featurette. “Gnaw” (Dark Sky Films) is a British horror film in which six friends in their twenties go on a weekend break to the English countryside and discover a perfect place to relax, Blackstock Farm, an idyllic farmhouse in the middle of nowhere with no one around for miles.
