Ridgewood November 18, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 The Ridgewood Council recently honored village firefighters Joseph Koonce, Joseph Ferraro, and Steven Maffei for using their life-saving techniques and training to save a man who had stopped breathing while he was visiting West Bergen Mental Health Center. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: We have the best in public safety,” Mayor David Pfund said as the council praised the three firefighters. Mayor Pfund explained that, on Aug. 6, the firefighters were the first to respond to an urgent emergency call from West Bergen Mental Health and found a man sitting in Firemen honored for life-saving techniques a chair and not breathing. The emergency responders took action to clear the man’s airways in the first step toward resuscitation, and the man resumed breathing spontaneously. He appeared to have choked on food, and was then given oxygen therapy to ensure he would recover completely. “Frankly, he is alive because of these three individuals,” Mayor Pfund said. Pfund also noted that the three firefighters were so modest about their life-saving rescue that he only learned of the successful resuscitation through Captain John Ward of the Ridgewood Police Department. Captain Ward told Pfund and the council without any prompting from the Ridgewood Fire Department that the three firefighters deserved the sort of recognition they received at the last council meeting.
