BVMI Center opens
Samuel Cassell, M.D. of Wyckoff, founder of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, addresses the more than 100 dignitaries and area residents who attended the opening of the organization’s Healthcare Center at 241 Moore Street in Hackensack last week. Dr. Cassell was also honored at a reception immediately following the ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The mission of BVMI is to provide free primary and preventive medical care to those residents of Bergen County who are working and earn between 100 percent and 200 percent of the prevailing federal poverty guideline, and have no health insurance of any kind. Patients will be seen by appointment. The BVMI Healthcare Center, based on a model of care developed by Volunteers in Medicine, is the 74th such center in the nation and the fourth in New Jersey. A core medical and administrative staff will be supported by volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, other health care professionals, and community volunteers in a variety of roles. BVMI is totally dependent on contributed income. The continued generosity of individuals and community organizations has made the healthcare center a reality and will make possible its long-term success. Grants from The Bolger Foundation, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, The Armellino Family Foundation, Lynn Diamond, and other family foundations provided key funds to launch the center.
