BVMI Center opens Samuel Cassell, M.D. of Wyckoff, founder of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, addresses the more than 100 dignitaries and area residents who attended the opening of the organization’s Healthcare Center at 241 Moore Street in Hackensack last week. Dr. Cassell was also honored at a reception immediately following the ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The mission of BVMI is to provide free primary and preventive medical care to those residents of Bergen County who are working and earn between 100 percent and 200 percent of the prevailing federal poverty guideline, and have no health insurance of any kind. Patients will be seen by appointment. The BVMI Healthcare Center, based on a model of care developed by Volunteers in Medicine, is the 74th such center in the nation and the fourth in New Jersey. A core medical and administrative staff will be supported by volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, other health care professionals, and community volunteers in a variety of roles. BVMI is totally dependent on contributed income. The continued generosity of individuals and community organizations has made the healthcare center a reality and will make possible its long-term success. Grants from The Bolger Foundation, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, The Armellino Family Foundation, Lynn Diamond, and other family foundations provided key funds to launch the center. Villadom Happenings Seniors plan trip The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center in Midland Park will be going to Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Cost of the trip is $42 and includes show ticket to “Miracle on 34th Street” at Tropicana Casino. The casino bonus is a $5 cash voucher and buffet. Participants must have valid photo ID to receive the bonus. All area seniors are welcome to join this trip, which will leave from Graydon Pool on Linwood Avenue and Northern Parkway in Ridgewood. Prostate cancer support group to meet LifeLines, a supportive and informative resource for prostate cancer patients and their partners in Northern Bergen County, will meet Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 7:45 to 9 p.m. at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. The group was formed by prostate cancer patients to share information and experience about available treatment and service resources. The church is located at 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River. Swingers seek new singers The Roy Meyer Swingers jazz vocal group is looking for new members who like to sing close harmonies. The select 15-voice mixed choral ensemble sings four- and six-part harmonies in the popular style of Glenn Miller’s Modemaires and today’s Manhattan Transfer. The group rehearses on Mondays at 8 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church on Pulis Avenue. The Swingers have performed world-wide on radio and TV, at major country clubs and hotels in the News York metro area, and have produced six CDs. Three successful European concert tours as Friendship Ambassadors included England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and behind the Iron Curtain in Romania. They have presented concerts throughout the eastern states, have performed with the United States Army Jazz Knights big band in the West Point amphitheater, on college campuses, in concert with the Ink Spots, Honeydreamers, and Four Freshmen vocal groups, and were selected a national finalist at the Johnny Mann Great American Choral Festival in Baltimore. Roy Meyer, the director of the group, is a professional jazz pianist, composer, arranger, chorus director, writer, producer, instructor, vocal coach. Meyer founded the Swingers as a non-profit organization, which has annually provided a $3,000 scholarship for talented Bergen and Passaic county high school students for their advanced music education, several of whom have gone on to professional performing careers. All interested male and female vocalists should have a voice that blends, choral experience in singing harmony parts, and some sight reading ability. Swine Flu vaccine available The next Bergen County H1N1 (Swine) Influenza Vaccination Clinic will be held Nov. 17 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bergen County Technical School, Paramus, 275/285 Pascack Road, Paramus. Registration is mandatory; walkins will be turned away. This clinic is for the CDC priority groups only: pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of infants less than six months of age; and children/young adults six months to 24 years of age, and adults ages 25 through 64 with chronic medical conditions. Bridge lessons available The non-profit North Jersey Bridge Association is offering free bridge lessons to students in grades six through 12 with trained teachers through schools, libraries and community centers in northern New Jersey. Students will learn this challenging game with 12 to 16 hours of beginners’ lessons taught by trained bridge teachers at no cost to students or the schools. To participate in the program, a sponsoring teacher or program director must be available to work with the bridge teacher to recruit students, help with supervision, and communicate with parents. Lessons are usually held after-school for 90 minutes. Adjustments can be made to the schedule as needed.
