Mendelssohn’s brilliant violin piece, “Concerto in E Minor,” a staple since it was written for violinist Ferdinand David and first performed with David as the soloist on March 13, 1845, will be the featured work on the Ridgewood Symphony’s Nov. 20 orchestra program. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 335 North Van Dien Avenue, just north of Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. This inaugural concert of the Ridgewood Symphony’s 70th season promises to be an extraordinary event. “Concerto in E Minor” was Mendelssohn’s last large orchestral work. It was one of the first concertos of the Romantic era and is unusual in that the violin enters almost immediately, and there are no breaks between the movements. The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra’s performance will include violin soloist Kurt Nikkanen. Nikkanen, a native of Hartford, Connecticut, is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, where he was a student of Dorothy Delay. He has played all over the world and enjoys a reputation as one of a small number of rising virtuosos. Also on the program will be the “Academic Festival Overture” by Brahms and three works by Wagner, includ-

ing preludes from “Die Meistersinger” and “Tristan and Isolde.” The opening downbeat by Maestro Arkady Leytush will introduce a world premier of a fanfare for orchestra entitled “Paradisum Fanfare,” commissioned by the Ridgewood Symphony for its 70th season and composed by Professor Arthur Gottschalk, who is currently in residence at Rice University. Professor Gottschalk will attend the
premiere of his composition. Tickets and subscriptions for the entire four concert series may be purchased in advance. Individual tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. Tickets purchased at the door will be priced slightly higher. Advance tickets are available at the RSO’s website, www. ridgewoodsymphony.org or by calling (201) 612-0118.
Police nab 39 at Halloween party
The Ridgewood Police Department arrested 35 juveniles and four adults at a large party on Spring Avenue the night of Halloween. Police reported that they received a tip that a large underage drinking party was in progress on Oct. 31. When the police cars pulled up, the partiers attempted to flee in all directions. Numerous containers of alcohol were found littering the vicinity. One 19-year-old Ridgewood man tried to escape after breaking a window, and three other adults were apprehended along with the 35 juveniles. Police also reported that the homeowner at the party was observed trying to hide a half-empty can of beer under a parked vehicle. The man who tried to escape through the broken window was charged with criminal mischief and obstruction of a government function, and faces a hearing in Ridgewood Municipal Court. The other three adults were released pending further investigation and the juveniles were released into the custody of their parents. J. KOSTER
