Community urged to wear poppies for Memorial Day
The members of the American Legion Post in Ridgewood are distributing veteran made poppies throughout the village during the month of May. Members of the community are asked to make a small donation and proudly wear a poppy – particularly during Memorial Day weekend. In all conflicts and wars, poppies are a reminder of the binding comradeship and remembrance veterans have for those who have fallen. The American Legion Auxiliary memorial poppy is a symbol of the price of war and the sacrifice of millions. “Wear (a poppy) in honor of the millions of Americans who have willingly served our nation, all too many of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Bob Paoli, head of Ridgewood’s American Legion Post. “This entire Memorial Day weekend will honor as a tribute to all veterans, especially those who are currently serving in the Global War on Terror.” The poppy also honors the hospitalized and disabled veterans who make these red, handcrafted flowers. The poppy continues to provide a financial and therapeutic benefit to those veterans who construct them, and benefit thousands of other veterans and their families by the revenues collected from poppy distribution. In the battlefields of Belgium during World War I, poppies grew wild amid the ravages of war. The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to be covered, allowing them to grow and forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed of war. On Monday, May 25, the Ridgewood American Legion Post 53 will hold a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. in Van Neste Square Park. The entire community is invited to attend this year’s ceremonies.
