Ridgewood
Community Hymn Festival, scholarship presentation set
The 20th Annual Community Hymn Festival sponsored by the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will be held Sunday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at The West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. An ecumenical choir representing over a dozen area churches, a brass and percussion ensemble, organ, piano and handbell choir will participate. The Community Hymn Festival is a public event supporting the John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund. At the festival, the Rodland Scholarship will be awarded to organist John A. Morabito, an undergraduate student of organ at the Eastman School of Music, who will be the featured soloist at the festival. Following the theme of “Liturgy: Our Common Heritage,” the massed choir representing six denominations will sing hymns and anthems from many Christian traditions. The Rodland Scholarship was established in 1989 by the Northern NJ Chapter of the American Guild of Organists to celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. John R. Rodland, minister of music at the West Side Presbyterian Church from 1968 until his death in 1989. Jack Rodland was a strong supporter of the ecumenical movement, a brilliant organist, and an influential teacher in Ridgewood. Endowed by generous contributions over the years from his colleagues, former students and members and friends from the West Side Presbyterian Church, the Rodland fund has supported over 50 young musicians entering the profession of church music. According to AGO Board spokesman John Bullough, many former competitors are now serving with distinction throughout the nation in prominent churches as well as colleges and conservatories of music. The Rodland Scholarship offers the most generous cash awards in the entire profession of organ and church music. This year’s winner will receive $8,000. Second and third place winners, Jared Ostermann of Notre Dame University graduate school and Joo Soo Son of the Eastman School of Music doctoral program, will receive $3,500 and $2,500, respectively. Bullough said, “The influence of the Rodland Scholarship in preserving the legacy of the great music of the church now extends far beyond that which could have been anticipated when the Fund was established. It would be difficult to imagine a

greater or more appropriate tribute to the memory of Jack Rodland.” The public is invited to attend the festival. A free-will offering will be received (suggested donation $10) with all pro-
ceeds to benefit the scholarship fund. West Side Presbyterian Church is located at 6 South Monroe Street, Varian Fry Way, Ridgewood. Ample off-the-street parking is available.
