Rebecca still struggles with the painful and debilitating symptoms of bipolar disorder. “I know what it’s like to be in and out of hospitals countless times, enduring countless electroconvulsive shock therapy treatments and barely hanging on while waiting for medication changes and adjustments to take affect. I believed I was going to be a mentally institutionalized person for the rest of my life. I thought I had no potential to live a normal life. Now, thanks to dedicated doctors and a loving and supportive family, all that has changed and I can lead a normal life. Taking Strides Against Mental Illness, the organization I founded, is my way of helping others who are suffering from a stigmatizing, misunderstood, misdiagnosed and frightening illness,” said Rebecca. Proceeds from the walk will go to NARSAD, the world’s leading charity dedicated to mental health research. Its mission is to alleviate human suffering from mental illness by raising money for scientific research on the causes, treatment and prevention of serious mental disorders with the goal of finding cures. Since 1987, NARSAD has distributed more than $239 million in research grants to support promising, innovative studies by more than 2,500 scientists at leading universities, medical centers and research institutions around the world. NARSAD’s funding of research focuses primarily on schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and autism. HARDING WINE&SPIRIT Of course wants a case of wine for Mother’s Day.
