Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 6, 2009 This year’s Walter Engel Scholarships were presented to six outstanding high school senior musicians who have gone to extraordinary lengths to reach out to others by performing for charity fundraisers, religious services, hospitals, nursing homes, and civic functions, and by mentoring younger or less fortunate students. The winners include Richard Sayanagi, cellist, and Hayley Clark, soprano, both of Ridgewood; Ian Askins, pianist, of Hillsdale; Kevin Hanse, violist, of Pompton Plains; Christie Gamon, pianist, of Chatham; and Alicia Vitale, soprano, of Franklin Lakes. Last month, the scholarship winners and dozens of other young classical musicians from northern New Jersey were Area youth musicians earn Walter Engel Scholarships featured in concerts at the 18th Annual Walter Engel Festival of Young Performers. The performances were held at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. Representing a range of ages from 8 to 18, the musicians included pianists, string and wind players, and singers who performed solo or in small ensembles. The annual festival provides a non-competitive performance venue for young musicians and encourages them to share their musical talent with their communities. The Cottage Place Gallery is hosting an exhibit of paintings by Robert J. Demarest. Demarest specializes in water media and enjoys plein air painting. As a fly fisherman he is attracted to the many moods of a river. Demarest has exhibited at the Bergen Museum, The Belskie Museum, and the Piermont Fine Arts Gallery and has won numerous awards at juried shows including the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Ridgewood Art Institute. His recent book, “Traveling with Winslow Homer,” has been awarded a Book of the Year medal in the fine art category in Foreword Magazine’s Annual Competition.
