March 11, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 7 Glen Rock District names Verducci superintendent of schools by John Koster The Glen Rock Board of Education has named Dr. David Verducci as the new superintendent of the K-12 school system at a salary of $225,000. Dr. Verducci has been superintendent of the River Vale schools for the past five years, and replaces Glen Rock Superintendent of Schools George Connelly, whose contract was not renewed. A 1975 graduate of Saint Peter’s College, Verducci began his career in education as an elementary school teacher and middle school teacher in Union City. He later became a high school social studies teacher in Cliffside Park and in Englewood. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Jersey City State College, and completed graduate work at Georgetown. He was part of the Oxford Roundtable program at Oxford University in 2007-2008. Verducci is a resident of Upper Saddle River and will complete his contract with the River Vale district in June. He spent five years in the River Vale district and had previously been superintendent in Fairview for eight years. His official confirmation is expected at the May 4 reorganization meeting, which will follow the April 21 school board and budget election. Artists are being asked to donate their works to the Glen Rock Poverty Project’s Awareness Auction. The event will be held April 18 at the Glen Rock Community Church as a benefit fore the children of Haiti. The proceeds of the auctions and film screening by the Glen Rock High School Poverty Awareness Club will go directly to Partners in Health. The funds will be used to buy mosquito netting for the beds of youngsters in Haiti, where malaria continues to be a health concern. Use of mosquito netting is said to prevent 95 percent of the potential malaria cases in the tropics. Through a holiday card sale and voluntary donations, the Glen Rock Poverty Project has already given 1,400 mosquito nets to the children of Haiti. The group hopes to reach its goal of 8,000 bed units. Artists’ work sought for Poverty Project Auction The Glen Rock Poverty Project’s previous efforts included the 2007 construction of a house in Paterson under the auspices of Habitat for Humanity. The house was constructed with the help of adult carpenters and student volunteers from Glen Rock High School, the Alexander Hamilton Elementary School, Ridgewood High School, and Mary Help of Christians High School. Last year, the organization raised funds for PlayPump wells in sub-Saharan Africa. These wells enable children to pump their own water as they use playground equipment instead of taking very long, time-consuming walks to the rivers for drinking and cooking water, which is often not sanitary. Artists who wish to make donations to the upcoming auction may contact Beth Fernandez at (973) 420-0079. Come have Fun at Green Twig this Summer!
