(Two of the “Japanese” dancers were natural blondes and some of the “Asian Indian” dancers were born in the United States or in Pakistan. The graceful dancing and simultaneous drumming of Korean girls in swirling traditional hanbok and the frenetic energy of Japanese male drummers in headbands and yukata also drew strong applause from last year’s audience. The supervisor of the event is Ridgewood teacher Helen Aslanides. Senior students from the various Asian groups serve as organizers. J. KOSTER Ridgewood residents will have a chance to enjoy the Ridgewood High School Asian Festival at the high school campus center on Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. This public performance will be a benefit for Doctors without Frontiers. The student performers will reprise the dances, skits, drumming, martial arts, and fashion show they offer their peers the previous school day. A regular early spring event at Ridgewood High School, the Asian Festival last year featured board-splintering tae kwon do, a kumbo (wooden sword) competition with protective masks and padded armor, simulated costumed swordplay in a skit with 40 Korean and Japanese swordsmen and swordswomen, a costumed skit based on the Korean Cinderella story, and some high-energy Asian Indian dancing by performers in gorgeous costumes.
