The Valley Hospital recently hosted the Third Annual EMS Gala, an informational and recognition event honoring the efforts of first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and emergency room nurses from Bergen and Passaic counties. This year’s event included case presentations by Robert Meichsner, supervisor, emergency services at The Valley Hospital, and Joseph Diorio, M.D., a physician in Valley’s department of emergency medicine, and an overview of the emergency medical coordination center system by Tom Rose, MCC coordinator at Holy Name Hospital. Among the awards presented were the EMT of the Year, Paramedic of the Year and ER Nurse of the Year. The EMT of the Year Award went to Janie Klienert, of the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps; Paramedic of the Year was Jane Noonan of The Valley Hospital Mobile Intensive Care Unit; and ER Nurse of the Year was Alyson Baratta, of The Valley Hospital Emergency Department.

Third Annual EMS Gala honors emergency personnel
The Ridgewood Police Department and the Bergen County K-9 unit responded to what the attempted burglary of an occupied house on Feb. 19. A cleaning crew inside the house heard knocking, followed by what sounded like an attempt to break down the door, and locked themselves in a bedroom and contacted their employer, who called the police. When Ridgewood police officers arrived they found that the door had been

kicked in, and they searched the house and the vicinity, assisted by the Bergen County K-9 unit. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. On Feb. 18, Patrolman John Chuck arrested three teenagers in a vehicle running with its lights out. All three were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The driver was also charged with provisional license violation and drug possession in a motor vehicle.
Patrolman Chuck also stopped a reported speeder on North Maple Avenue on Feb. 24, detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage, and arrested the driver, a Woodcliff Lake man. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding, and refusal to take a breath test after the man failed a field sobriety test. J. KOSTER
