Village woman named Lowell Mason Fellow
Dr. Sandra Dackow, a resident of Ridgewood, has been named a Lowell Mason Fellow for 2009 by MENC, the National Association for Music Education. Lowell Mason (1792-1872) is credited with introducing music instruction to American public schools and establishing teacher training in music education. This honor, presented in his name, recognizes outstanding music educators or advocates. The 2009 Fellows, have been formally recognized in a ceremony during MENC’s 2009 Music Education Week in Washington, DC. Dackow holds three degrees from the Eastman School of Music and currently serves as music director of the Hershey Symphony Orchestra in Pennsylvania. An Aspen Conducting Fellow, she was awarded the Silver Medal in the 2001 Vakhtang Jordania/New Millennium Conducting Competition in Ukraine. Dackow has published over 90 works for student orchestras. She has appeared as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the US and abroad. She recently served as president of the Conductors Guild, an international organization drawing members from 32 countries. She has also been a member Dackow teaches at William Paterson University and has been involved in graduate string and orchestra education at a number of other universities and institutions. This award-winning ASCAP arranger was designated by Michael Blakeslee, senior deputy executive director of MENC. “This is a great honor and caught me completely by surprise,” Dackow stated. “I believe that bringing the music teaching community into close alignment with professional orchestras and conductors benefits everyone, as we share great music with listeners of all ages.” Lowell Mason Fellows are individuals who have furthered MENC: The National Association for Music Education’s mission of music education for all. Music educators, music education advocates, political leaders, and key decision makers are eligible for designation. The names of the Fellows are permanently displayed at the National Center for Music Education in Reston, Virginia. “Through the centuries, people have been selected for various kinds of designations on many different standards of (continued on page 17)
