Page 24 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • June 24, 2009 ‘The Full Monty’ (continued from Entertainment page) peppy and consummate a performer as ever. Her very entrance in Act I elicited an extended ovation at a recent performance, and her Act II performance, “Jeanette’s Showbiz Number,” brought a welcome encore when the applause simply would not die down. Stritch has the timing of a pro and knows how to milk a gag without smothering it. Her look alone is priceless. Nealy has a number of his own: a comic number called “Big Black Man,” sung in a rich baritone, with enough double entendres to elicit chuckles from even the most straitlaced audience. When Nealy goes into his versions of the mashed potato and other assorted dances of yesteryear, he glows. Colella and Michele Ragusa, as Dave and Harold’s wives, respectively, are both strong performers with strong voices and irresistible stage presence. They both get a chance to display two sides of their characters’ personalities, making them not mere caricatures, but real women with greater depth than outward signs might indicate. Director Mark S. Hoebee has hit a home run with this production. In casting, energy, pacing, freshness, and sheer entertainment, “The Full Monty” is a triumph. The lyrics by David Yazbek are occasionally raunchy but always clever, and the choreography by Denis Jones, often meant to look awkward and tentative, is first rate. Charlie Morrison’s lighting renders the show suitable for older children. “The Full Monty” performances are Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 2 and 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $92 and may be purchased from the Paper Mill Playhouse box office at (973) 376-4343 or online at www.papermill.org. on Scott (Brandon Routh, “Superman Returns”), who is suddenly alone. When he invites sympathetic strangers Ryan (Jesse Bradford) and Mary (Sophia Bush) to share his apartment, they soon begin to intrude on every aspect of his life, including his new relationship with the girl of his dreams, Leslie (Jennifer Morrison). “Alice’s House” (Indie Pix) is a crowded apartment building in Brazil. Alice (Carla Ribas) is a middle-aged manicurist who shares an apartment with her husband, three grown sons, and her mother. The husband is having an affair with a teenage neighbor, one son is a gay hustler and another is a petty thief. Only grandma (Berta Zemel) sees everything as it is and, ironically, she is going blind. “New York Yankees: Perfect Games and No-Hitters” (A&E Homer Entertainment) is a six-disc box set featuring six iconic Bronx Bombers’ ballgames, from Don Larsen’s perfect Game 5 of the 1956 World Series to David Cone’s July 18, 1999 performance in the third perfect game at the original Yankee Stadium. Other games include the perfect game by David Wells (May 17, 1998) and no-hitters by Dave Righetti against the Red Sox (July 4, 1983), Jim Abbott (Sept. 4, 1993), and Dwight Gooden (May 14, 1996). Video quality is poorest on the World Series game, shot when not as many cameras were used to cover games. However, this footage is balanced by the game’s significance and the play-by-play by Mel Allen and Vin Scully. Oranges and reds have their brightness dulled into a bleached monochrome. The often surrealistic images are perfect accompaniments to the dreamlike recollections of the men who fought in the war. “Confessions of a Shopaholic” (Touchstone Home Entertainment) is a broad comedy about consumerism gone mad. Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) has finally reached the outer limits of her credit cards and owes $16,000. To pay for her elaborate wardrobe, she has to get a job. Her dream job is a position at New York’s top fashion magazine, “Alette,” but she has to settle for a desk at “Successful Saving.” Dogged by a persistent debt collector (Robert Stanton), Becky becomes the unlikely author of a column on saving money. Her unconventional outlook on money matters attracts the approval of her boss (Hugh Dancy). Though Fisher has charm, the movie looks like remnants of other, better comedies. John Goodman, Joan Cusack, and Kristen Scott Thomas are wasted in small roles. DVD and Blu-ray extras include bloopers, deleted scenes, and the music video “Stuck with Each Other.” “Table for Three” (Anchor Bay Entertainment) focuses Answer Last Week’s Puzzle Answer to to Last Week’s Puzzle
