Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • June 24, 2009 Glen Rock Parade plans announced by John Koster Glen Rock’s July 4 parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. this year. Marching units will convene at 9 a.m. at the Glen Rock High School parking lot. The parade will advance from Harristown Road up Highland Avenue and then down Rock Road through the center of the shopping district. Previous parades, especially in the 1970s and early 1980s, often featured spectacular floats, including such memorable oddities as a jack-in-the box that spat water on spectators, a two-headed dragon puffing out water vapor, and a Yankee Doodle puppet on a rockinghorse so tall that marchers on both flanks had to push the utility wires out of the way with extended shuffleboard sticks. World War II veterans often ride in a restored and reconditioned White halftrack, an armored vehicle from World War II rebuilt by its new owner some years ago in a Hawthorne garage. Bagpipe players and Civil War reenactors, who fire volleys of blank powder cartridges are perennial favorites. Local dignitaries, church leaders, Scouts and other groups give the Glen Rock parade a unique hometown flavor and the line of march generally includes residents who turn out to show support for their friends who march. Students at Glen Rock’s Central School managed to avoid the rain during last week’s outdoor fun fair. Staying dry #1 BASEBALL CAMP IN AMERICA Mahwah. Campers 7-17.
