Planning board hears differing opinions on Valley
by John Koster The audience was divided over the issue of expanding Ridgewood’s Valley Hospital, but only three people were able to speak because of the length of last week’s planning board meeting. The application involves a change to the village’s master plan and an expansion of the hospital zone. The plans as discussed would provide the hospital with 378,000 square feet for added services, and would allow three beds to be added to the hospital’s 451 beds. Plans also call for a change of the building height from 48 to 56 feet and would limit additional rooftop mechanics to 24 feet. If plans were approved, the building would increase from 550,000 to 970,000 square feet. Village Planner Blais Brancheau said he wanted to minimize the visual impact of the changes. Last week’s meeting will reconvene on June 17, with at least one more meeting at a date not yet determined before the planning board votes. The Ridgewood Village Council would also have to change an ordinance before the last hurdle to the hospital’s expansion and modernization can be cleared. Charles Collins, the attorney for the hospital, requested clarification on several issues at the most recent meeting. By the time the residents in the ample audience were permitted to address the board, there was only time for three speakers. Planners said that potential objectors seemed to be a majority, but that there seemed to be plenty of supporters as well. To date, about 50 people have signed up for a chance to speak on this application. Ridgewood Parks and Recreation is offering summer golf camps to village youth in kindergarten through grade six. The program is being offered through Total Golf Adventures of Bergen County. Instructors will provide basics such as proper golf set-up, swing fundamentals, rules and etiquette, and scoring.
