Instruction and play may include badminton, baseball, basketball, bocce, cricket, net ball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, hand ball, floor hockey, discovery games, Olympic games, parachute, pillo polo, soccer, softball, tennis, touch rugby, and volleyball. Games take place in a positive, low-pressure, educational environment under the guidance of The U.S. Sports Institute’s qualified coaches who are chosen for their ability to motivate and encourage campers. This camp promotes integrity, self-esteem, positive values, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. The program, offered through the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department, will take place at Maple Park the week of Aug. 10 through 14. A full day will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for seven through 14 year olds, offering an introduction to 15 sports. The cost is $189. A half day offering is available for children ages five through seven, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering 10 sports. The cost is $169. All campers will receive a USSI T-shirt and certificate. Participants should bring a bag lunch and plenty to drink. Appropriate clothing and sneakers should be worn. Authors discuss ‘Prism’ at library Author Faye Kellerman and her teenage daughter, Aliza, will be at the Ridgewood Public Library on Wednesday, July 1, at 7 p.m. The Kellermans have combined their imaginations to create “Prism,” a new science fiction book for readers ages 12 to adult. “Prism” begins with three students from Los Angeles on a school field trip to New Mexico. In the aftermath of a car crash on their way to Carlsbad Caverns, the teens find themselves plunged into a parallel universe in which their normal worlds of family and high school remain the same, except that in this world no medicine or healthcare exists, and sick people are allowed to die. With more than 20 million novels in print internationally, Faye Kellerman is best known for her acclaimed Peter Decker and Rita Lazarus series which began in 1986 with “Ritual Bath.” Her husband Jonathan Kellerman and their son Jesse round out the family of successful writers, and now the youngest member, Aliza, adds a refreshing new voice to the Kellerman collective. Tickets are required for this event, which is suitable for adults and students ages 12 and up. Space is limited; advance registration is advised. Ridgewood residents are encouraged to reserve tickets in person at the library, 125 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. Track and field camps offered Registration is currently underway for the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department’s summer track and field program for youngsters in grades five through eight. The program emphasizes instructive technique in track and field events: sprints, long distance, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, and javelin. Each two and a half hour session will involve everyone in a learn-by-doing format. Enjoyment, not hard training, is the main goal of the program. Mike Mullin, boys’ and girls’ varsity winter track head coach and boys’ and girls’ spring track and field head coach at Ridgewood High School, will conduct the program. High school varsity athletes will serve as counselors and provide individual instruction. The program will run at Ridgewood High School’s track facility for two four-day sessions. Session I will meet July 6 through 9 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Session II will meet July 13 through 16 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 10 and 17 will be for rain make-up. Each session is $115 per participant or $210 for both sessions. Participants will receive a T-shirt. Kayaking instruction offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department is offering kayaking sessions to village residents at the Graydon Pool facility. Instruction, provided by members of the Hackensack River Canoe and Kayak Club, will include the basics of kayaking; the various types of boats, equipment and proper use, technique of entry, paddle strokes, and safety. All equipment, including kayaks, paddles, and PFDs, will be provided by Eastern Mountain Sports. The following sessions will be offered rain or shine: Saturday, June 13, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., adults only; Saturday, July 11, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., youths ages 12 through 17; Saturday, Aug. 8, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., adults only; Saturday, Sept. 5, 8:30 a.m., trip to Monksville Reservoir for adults only. Instructional sessions are $55per person; the September trip is $65 per person. Class size is limited and early registration is encouraged. Non-residents may register if space is available; an additional $10 will apply.
