June 10, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 21 Ridgewood Notes Track and field camps offered Registration is currently underway for the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department’s summer track and field program for youngsters in grades five through eight. The program emphasizes instructive technique in track and field events: sprints, long distance, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, and javelin. Each two and a half hour session will involve everyone in a learn-by-doing format. Enjoyment, not hard training, is the main goal of the program. Mike Mullin, boys’ and girls’ varsity winter track head coach and boys’ and girls’ spring track and field head coach at Ridgewood High School, will conduct the program. High school varsity athletes will serve as counselors and provide individual instruction. The program will run at Ridgewood High School’s track facility for two four-day sessions. Session I will meet July 6 through 9 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Session II will meet July 13 through 16 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 10 and 17 will be for rain make-up. Each session is $115 per participant or $210 for both sessions. Participants will receive a T-shirt. Tennis instruction and camp offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with All Pro Tennis, will begin offering tennis lessons and camps for village residents beginning the week of June 22. Youth and adult instructional classes will be held on Monday or Wednesday evenings at the Somerville Courts. The fee for each five-week instruction session is $90. Sessions are from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. for grades one and two, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. for third through fifth grade, 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. for grades six and up, and 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. for adults. All classes cancelled due to rain will be made up. Four day summer camps, Monday through Thursday, will be offered at the Somerville Courts beginning the week of July 6 and continuing through the week of Aug. 10, at either 9 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. for 90-minute sessions. The fee for each weekly camp is $100. Fridays are for rain make-ups. Participants will be grouped according to age and experience and are required to have a 2008 tennis badge. Home Run Derby set The Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation will sponsor a Home Run Derby for village children in kindergarten through grade 12. Family and friends are invited to this event, which will be held Monday, July 13, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The event will be held on Veteran’s Park North Field located behind Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Prizes will be awarded. The cost is $5 per person, and includes hot dogs, ice cream, and beverages. HILT hosts ‘A Museum in a Suitcase’ HILT (Highlights in Leisure Time), an organization for Ridgewood seniors, has scheduled its next meeting for Thursday, June 11 at 10 a.m. in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. The guest speaker will be a representative from the Botto House, a national landmark in Haledon. Botto was a skilled weaver in Italy prior to coming to the United States. The Botto home became a meeting place for strikers from the Paterson silk mills who were striving to improve working conditions and to end child labor. This program offers a great opportunity to learn more about life in the early 20th century. Refreshments will be served. Ridgewood residents 55 and older are invited to join HILT. Yearly dues are $10. Golf Outing planned Ridgewood United Methodist Church will host its Sev- enth Annual Golf Outing on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Great Gorge Country Club in Vernon. The price of $105, to be paid prior to the event, includes green fees, electric cart, box lunch, and dinner. Registration forms are available at the church office and sanctuary. Registration on the day of the outing is 8 a.m. Shotgun start is at 9 a.m. and dinner and awards is at 1:30 p.m. Call (201) 652-2868. Summer camp registration extended Ridgewood Summer Day Camp will open Tuesday, June 30 and run for six weeks to Friday, Aug. 7. Children in grades one through six will enjoy arts and crafts, organized games, swimming, special events and optional trips. It will be held at The Stable, Graydon Pool, Maple Park, Veteran’s Field, and Leuning Park from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Children should bring a bag lunch and beverage. Bus transportation is available to all. The day camp registration fee is $450 per child and includes two camp T-shirts. Optional trip prices vary; space is limited and registration will be accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis. Registration has been extended to June 15. HILT offers trip to Cloisters Ridgewood’s Highlights in Leisure Time seniors’ organization and the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department are sponsoring a trip to The Cloisters on Thursday, June 18. The Cloisters, located on a hill overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dedicated to the art and architecture of the European Middle Ages. A gallery and garden tour will be offered. Lunch will be served at the New Leaf Café, a charming 1930s structure in the park, offering a choice of entrees and dessert. The New Leaf Café is an enterprise of Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project. The bus will leave Graydon Pool parking lot at 9:45 a.m. (boarding will begin at 9:30 a.m.) and return at approximately 4 p.m. The cost for the trip is $53 for members and $58 for non-members.
