The rate for weekday parking will increase from 25 cents per hour to 50 cents per hour, which is projected, once the program is in full operation, to produce a surplus, though the effect of running the new rate from August through December will merely reduce the shortfall on metered parking to about $53,000. “Aug. 1 would be a great time to start because the town doesn’t have that many people at that time,” said Interim Village Manager Heather Mailander, appointed earlier that same evening to fill in for Village Manager James Ten Hoeve. Mailander reminded the council that she needed a decision that night if the program were to be advertised and implemented by Aug. 1. “I do agree with Heather, we have to move ahead here,” Deputy Mayor Keith Killion concurred. Killion and Paul Aronsohn, the council’s two-person Parking Committee, advocated the change in regulations, devised after the committee and Councilman Patrick Mancuso opposed the final plans for a parking garage with wrap-around shops and stores on Walnut Street. The parking garage plan was scrapped because Killion, Aronsohn, and Mancuso said they could not vote for anything that made such a drastic change in the appearance of downtown Ridgewood, and that the village should pursue other methods of adding parking spaces without disrupting aesthetics. The new parking arrangements at Chestnut Street were part of that initiative. Killion and Mailander both defined the terms clearly before the council approved the concept by unanimous consensus. “The meters will be programmed for 25 cents a half hour, and on Saturdays there will be a sign and the police won’t go in there and write tickets,” Killion said.
