Tracy Sprowls-Jenks, religious education minister, will lead the discussion of The Sienna Project and Margaret White, will describe the efforts of The Community of Friends in Action on Friday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. The Sienna Project, a not-for-profit organization, has a goal to build five schools in Guatemala by 2011. The villages chosen to receive schools are those that suffered great harm during the 30-year civil war that ended in 1998. The national government provides teachers to the villages, but does not provide funds for school buildings. Believing that education is a right of all children, the program has Friends of Guatemala discussion planned raised funds and sent three multi-generational groups to help build schools in Guatemala over the last three years. The Community of Friends in Action is a group of concerned citizens and Guatemalan workers in Bergen County. For many years, this group has tried to assist Guatemalan and other Hispanic workers who have been driven out of Guatemala because of the dire level of poverty there and have come to the U.S. seeking work. In 2009, the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood provided a grant to the group to create a 501(c)3 organization that could be more effective in meeting these needs. The Unitarian Society is located at 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, (201) 444 6225, www.uuridgewood.org.
