Celebration set for 20-year cancer survivors
On Saturday, June 13, cancer survivors will join in “A Celebration of Life,” as The Valley Hospital’s Blumenthal Cancer Center commemorates National Cancer Survivors Day. The annual event, to be held at the Luckow Pavilion in Paramus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will honor cancer survivors, their family members and friends, and the healthcare professionals who helped them recover. “This event recognizes cancer survivors, their family and friends, healthcare providers, and those engaged in cancer research. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a ‘survivor’ as anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life,” said Valley Hospital Oncology Program Coordinator Nancy Palumbo, R.N. “There are more cancer survivors in the U.S. today thanks to research, advances in technology, and the daily commitment of physicians, nurses, social workers, and others.” This year marks the 20th anniversary of Valley’s “Celebration of Life” event, and will include Virginia Campbell, a long-term cancer survivor from River Edge, as a featured speaker. Campbell felt a lump in her breast 20 years ago. The diagnosis was Stage Two breast cancer. After a partial mastectomy and the removal of 21 lymph nodes, 11 of which were positive for cancer, Campbell experienced a year of radiation and chemotherapy. Determined to stay alive for her daughter’s high school graduation, she fought her illness. Her resolve strengthened as she eagerly thought about her daughter’s college graduation and, later, her wedding. Then came the anticipation of a new baby. She credits friends and family with helping her cope, and offers special praise to the staff at Valley. Campbell looks forward to celebrating her victory on June 13, and to offering hope and encouragement to others. The event will include music and refreshments, caricaturists, hand massages, and other features. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about Living Strong, Living Well, sponsored by the Ridgewood YMCA; chart their years of survivorship on the Ladder of Life; and receive information about Pedaling for Prevention, Dr. John McConnell’s 5500 mile bike ride to raise awareness of colon cancer. The event is open to individuals of all ages who have been touched by cancer.
