Wojtal will present “Social Security Benefits and How to Get Them” at the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road, on Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. The 40-minute presentation will include basic entitlement to Social Security benefits, retirement, disability, Medicare and supplemental security income. The online services offered by Social Security including the online retirement estimator will also be discussed. A question and answer period will follow. As more information and registrations are being shifted to the Internet, the library is available to bridge the gap for those who do not have a computer or do not know how to use one. The reference staff of the Glen Rock Public Library is always available to help with the computers and the websites on a one-to-one basis if the library is not too busy. Patrons can apply for retirement benefits online or disability benefits and for help to pay the costs of the Medicare prescription drug program. ESL conversation classes underway ESL Conversation Classes have begun. They will meet on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Glen Rock Library’s quiet meeting room on the first level. Shona Perry, M.A., is leading the summer class. The sessions are informal and emphasize social aspects of speaking English. A newspaper especially for new English speakers, “Easy English News,” is provided by the library Many of the conversations revolve around its articles. William Paterson announces Dean’s List The following Glen Rock students were named to the Dean’s List at William Paterson University in Wayne for the spring 2009 semester: Sarah Chassen, Jie Lin, Alyson Mazzarella, David McGovern, and Michael Richter. In order to qualify, a student must carry a minimum of 12 credits for the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.45 or better. Jewish center schedules events The Glen Rock Jewish Center has planned Tisha B’Av observances, a Friday night barbeque and outdoor Shabbat services on Wednesday, July 29 at 8 p.m. in the social hall. At this special service and program, participants will sit on the floor as a way of recognizing the day of mourning for the tragedies in Jewish history. Please bring a flashlight. On Friday, Aug. 14 the Eighth Annual GRJC Barbeque and Erev Shabbat service will be held at 6 p.m. with services at 8 p.m. at 739 Harristown Road, the home of Rabbi Neil Tow and Rabbi Rachel Schwartz. Religious training registration begins The Glen Rock Jewish Center Religious School is accepting registrations for the 2009-10 religious school year, which begins in September 2009. Registration for the kindergarten program and for Sunday School for children in first and second grades is open. The classes meet every Sunday morning, September through June. Glen Rock Jewish Center members and prospective members are invited to register Hebrew School students for third through seventh grades for September classes. The two-hour classes meet twice a week, and include Hebrew, prayer, history, current events, music, and library. All programs include parent participation, workshops and trips. In addition, the school now has a computer lab that supports Hebrew programs for reading, history and holidays. A special education teacher is on staff for children with special needs. Beth Fernandez asks area residents who have gently used shoes to drop them off at her home before Aug. 1 so she can bring them to Guatemala, where many children are in need of shoes. Shoes that are clean and in good condition may be dropped off at 416 Ackerman Avenue, Glen Rock. Fernandez, organizer of the Glen Rock Poverty Project, has collected mosquito netting to prevent malaria in Haiti, raised funds to install PlayPumps so people in sub-Saharan Africa can bring up subterranean water, and supervised a drive that raised money to build a Habitat for Humanity house in Paterson three years ago. Cohen named to Dean’s List Matan Cohen of Glen Rock has been named to the Dean’s List at Rowan University in Glassboro for the spring 2009 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List a student must have earned a grade point average of 3.45 or above. Seniors plan summer trip The Glen Rock Senior Citizens Club will host a trip to Woodloch Pines on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The day’s activities will include a boat ride, entertainment, bingo, continental breakfast, and a family style lunch of roast beef, fried shrimp, apple pie, coffee, and tea. The cost is $44 for members and $47 for non members. The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 8:30 a.m. Contact Evelyn at (201) 4459238 to make a reservation.
