On Tuesday, July 28, Rio Clements and Friends will present a jazz concert. On Thursday, July 30, hear the McVey Family and Friends perform songs from Broadway and beyond. Concerts begin at 8:30 p.m. at the shell, which is located at Veterans Field, behind the Ridgewood Public Library on North Maple Avenue. All programs are free of charge. Audience members should bring a chair or blanket. In the event of rain, events are moved into the Benjamin Franklin Middle School on North Van Dien Avenue. Taped rain site information is available by calling (201) 444-1776 after 7 p.m. the day of the event. ‘Mikado’ auditions set The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is holding auditions for “The Mikado” on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Auditions for principal roles and chorus members will be held at the Community Church of Glen Rock (one block east of Maple Avenue on Rock Road) in Glen Rock. Performers should be prepared to sing a song from the show or a piece that best shows their vocal quality. Those who will not be singing a piece from “The Mikado” should bring their own music. Special needs soccer offered The Ridgewood Soccer Association has openings in its special needs program for children ages five through 14 who require the individualized attention available in a smaller group setting. Open to children in Ridgewood and neighboring towns, the program provides an enjoyable hour of soccer for players of all skill levels. A unique feature of the program is the participation by volunteers from the Ridgewood High School Girls Soccer team who serve as mentors. Whether a player is new to soccer or a seasoned veteran of the program, the aim is to develop skills, promote fitness, and emphasize the fun aspects of the game. Clinics are run on Saturday afternoons in Ridgewood from early September through early November. The cost is $60 for eight sessions. Each player receives an RSA team shirt and soccer ball. NJ Botanical Gardens host jazz Bob Leive, Lou Pallo, and Patti Rio will perform at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens on Friday, Aug. 7 as part of the NJBG Summer Concert Series. Each year, Leive and Rio of the Wooster Street Trolley and Lou Pallo of the Les Paul Trio combine their talents to create an evening of musical magic especially for NJBG, often bringing along special guests. The group incorporates a trumpet, guitar, and vocals in its program of jazz, ragtime, swing era classics, and contemporary favorites. Audience members should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Light refreshments are available for purchase. Attendees may also bring their own, but no alcohol is permitted. In the event of inclement weather, the concerts are moved into the Carriage House Visitor Center. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. NJBG requests a $3 per person donation. The final concert in the series will be held in August, and will feature Brassworks. The New Jersey State Botanical Garden at Skylands, which is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and admission to the garden is always free. There is a $5-per-car parking fee on summer holidays and weekends, Saturday and Sunday; weekday parking is free year-round. Light rail service available A new rail service to the Meadowlands Sports Complex was recently launched to provide New Jersey residents and visitors with travel convenience in attending year ‘round events at the Meadowlands. The new service will give customers access to the Meadowlands from 11 or the 12 NJ Transit lines, with the Frank R. Lautenberg Station providing the connection between Hoboken and the Meadowlands. Train service will operate approximately every 10 to 20 minutes between Secaucus and the Meadowlands before and after major events. Events include Jets and Giant pre-season and regular season home games, major concerts, and Gold Cup soccer. NJ Transit will be able to accommodate approximately 10,000 customers traveling to and from an event on the line. The new line consists of two new tracks, each about 2.5 miles long. Each set of tracks connects to the Pascack Valley Line. Service will begin about three and a half hours before a game or event and continue for about two hours after the conclusion of the event. Starting in September, Connecticut residents will be able to access the new line under a pilot program with MetroNorth Railroad. Visit njtransit.com or call customer service at (973) 275-5555 for more information. ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ presented Tom-Foolery Theatre, a newly-formed community theater group for young adults, will present its first production, Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun,” on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 2 at 3 p.m. at The Church of the Guardian Angel in Allendale. “Annie Get Your Gun,” tells the spirited tale of legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley, featuring hit songs such as “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” The cast features many members from area towns.
