Glen Rock
Shakespeare comedy to be performed at the library
This week, the Glen Rock Public Library will present two related programs. On July 14, a professional actress will be on hand to discuss William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” This event will be followed by a July 19 performance of this well loved comedy. The Glen Rock Library’s first Summer Theater Discussion will take place July 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the library’s reading room. Professional actress and Glen Rock resident Aurelia Mills will present a discussion of William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” In addition to the traditional discussions of plot, character and history, Mills will bring out some of the nuances of the characters with some short readings. This is the first of what will be an annual event, highlighting the production of a play by the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. Mills has played New York and out of town, including a star tour in the U.S. and Canada of Neil Simon’s “California Suite.” She was directed by Joshua Logan, Jerry Adler, and Gordon Parks; was David Carradine’s co-star; and was featured in two movies, “Here & There” and “The Supercops.” She has also performed in children’s theater and radio. She has played roles in most daytime soap operas: “Another World,” “As the World Turns,” “One Life to Live,” “The Doctors,” and “Hidden Faces.” On Sunday, July 19, The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey’s Next Stage Ensemble will bring the classic words of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” alive with an abridged production at the Glen Rock Public Library. The performance, to benefit the Friends and produced by the Arts Council, is open to all area residents. Weather permitting, the performance at 7 p.m. will take place outside. An after-performance reception to meet the actors is planned. Underwriting has been provided by the Glen Rock Savings Bank, a long-time supporter of the visual and performing arts in town through the Arts Council. “The Taming of the Shrew,” is Shakespeare’s most uproarious comedy. A father attempts to marry off his two daughters; however he will only marry his youngest if someone will marry his eldest, Katharina, the headstrong “shrew.” This work is alternately silly and razorsharp, with various psychological torments doled out by Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona who takes up the challenge to court Katharina. The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey is one of the leading classics performance groups in the nation. The Next Stage Ensemble, part of the Shakespeare Theater’s Summer Professional Training program, was created to foster the work of early-career actors, while serving New Jersey’s communities with exciting and affordable live theater. This dramatic presentation is made possible by the Friends of the Library and the Glen Rock Arts Council. The Friends group was formed in 1982 to stimulate awareness of the Glen Rock Public Library as an informational, educational, and cultural center for all people of all ages in the community. In partnership with the Arts Council, the two groups have a fine record of bringing the visual and performing arts to the residents of Glen Rock through a variety of events designed to entertain and educate.
